Unsigned artist Q&A: DJ 6IX

Please introduce yourself...

I go by DJ 6IX, it's a play on numbers and words, but it's pronounced as 'six'. I live in Toronto, Canada, born and raised. I DJ a lot of different genres of music and focus mainly on producing drum & bass.

How long have you been making music?

I've been producing for six years, and freelance studio recording for two years. I produce a lot of drum & bass, and also have some dubstep and house tunes out there. I also record bands and create music for advertisements. To develop the craft of producing and engineering music has taken time, and I'm constantly learning and always trying to find information to help me make great sounding, dance floor ready music.

How would you describe your music?

My music is on the melodic side, but also contains a dark and raw atmosphere. I try to keep my music simple. I'm a firm believer in making the drums and sub bass the standout in my drum & bass tunes. I like my subs to have rhythm and that's what gets you dancing. I have a minimalist emotion in my music, making you concentrate on what's really making you move.

Which track by any artist do you wish you'd made?

There are so many tracks across so many genres I could mention. As for drum & bass/jungle, I prefer tracks that have a lot of feeling and soul, so I'm going to have to go with 'Inner City Life' by the man Goldie. That tune had such great influence and spectrum, it's the kind of track all artists strive to make.
