Welcome to the official Kmag podcast: a monthly showcase of the best new drum & bass, dubstep, hip hop and breakbeat from both signed and unsigned producers, as well as news, event coverage, exclusive guest mixes and interviews from the people at the forefront of the scene. Subscribe via iTunes.
Your hosts are P-dex and GLP, London-based DJ / producers who are always on the lookout for up-and-coming talent. If you'd like to submit tunes for the unsigned section, please get in touch.
Our guest this month is Stanza of dubstep/grime label True Tiger Recordings. He tells us what the label's been up to recently, why Michael Jackson's singles still stand the test of time, and what it's like playing dubstep to thousands of rock fans while supporting Enter Shikari on their UK tour. Plus he delivers an upfront mix from labelmates Sukh Knight and Scandalous Unltd featuring some fresh new dubstep tracks.
We've also got a special sampling section where GLP explains the origins of some of the most famous drum breaks in modern music. He starts with the most famous break of all, the Amen, and delves into the archives to play part of the 1969 tune Amen Brother, by the Winstons. He also plays some classic early jungle from Renegade and Ray Keith to demonstrate the break in action.
If you want to know more about the origin and influence of what is probably the most important six-second sample of all time, we recommend this video.
GLP also plays The Incredible Bongo Band's cover of Apache – the source of the Apache break. Dating from the early 1970s, this track was so important to the development of turntablism that DJ Kool Herc has described it as "the national anthem of hip hop". GLP picks examples from Matrix and Chase & Status that show what the Apache break sounds like when it's reworked into drum & bass and hip hop.
We've got all that plus great tracks from Original Sin, Alix Perez, Netsky and the Upbeats, as well as a classic track – 'Shadow Boxing' by Nasty Habits – that's been specially recommended by Kmag editor Colin. And of course, there's the unsigned section. See below to read about the artists featured this month, in their own words.
Synamatix
Please introduce yourself...
Hi, I'm Synamatix. I'm a 21-year-old dubstep DJ/producer from NW London.
How long have you been making music?
I've been making music since I was 11, but only got into production when I was 16. Been producing dubstep for about a year and a half now.
How would you describe your music?
Deep dubstep, taking influence from two-step, jazz, drum & bass etc. I just write deep bass, big deep bass. I can't write much else, haha.
Which track by any artist do you wish you'd made?
Kode 9 vs. Badawi - 'Den of Drumz' ... it's got the sickest rhythm.
How/where can people hear more of your music?
When I DJ out, or on soundloud.com/synamatix. I'm a bit of an internet slag so my music is pretty much everywhere now - just search for 'Synamatix'.

Hansollo
Please introduce yourself...
My name is Daniel Noetzel, I'm from Poland.
How long have you been making music?
I have been producing D&B since 2005. But I started my adventure with music a lot earlier, making beats for some local hip-hop groups. That was very amateur, though.
How would you describe your music?
It's hard to describe my own style. I try to cross musical boundaries and do not like to be classified into one particular genre. My inspirations come from various sides. Ambient, reggae, hip hop, psytrance, funk – there's something interesting in every style and I am trying to develop without any limits. I avoid copying from others, rather look for interesting ideas and refine them in my own way.
Which track by any artist do you wish you'd made?
Oh, there's too much to name them all :). In D&B it would be Future Prophecies' productions – 'Miniamba' and 'Black Dragon', or Concord Dawn 'Morning Light'.
How/where can people hear more of your music?
Some of my productions are to be released in the beginning of 2010. Art of Electronic Music will release my tracks 'Colossus', 'Sun on the Water', 'Save Me From Myself' and 'Abyss'. 'Positive Vibes' will be a part of a Polish dubstep compilation by Apparitino recordings. There are few more to come, but I cannot tell you the details yet. www.soundcloud.com/hansollo
