What's your new single 'Run 'Em Out' all about?
'Run 'Em Out' was made as a salute to the music that raised me, I grew up with reggae and soundsystem culture and wanted to bring whole vibe of that to a 170 bpm track. I've always tried to do it, but it's always been on a more dub / roots and cultre vibe. I wanted to do something with more of an 80s soundsystem feel to it
How did the collaboration with Roots Manuva come about?
I made the idea of the track and could just hear Roots on it right away and knew he would get and relate to exactly what angle I was coming from with the riddim track. He's actually the first name I thought of when it came to artists I wanted to work with on the album.
What's the concept behind the video and whose idea was it?
It was actually Shy FX's idea to have someone document the session, it was a bit weird having a couple of dudes sit in and film you record & arrange a track but a lot of fun too! I'm really happy with the way it turned out and happy people get a glimpse at what's gone into the track.
What can we expect on your album 'Foundation'?
All sorts really, d&b, dubstep, downtempo, collaborations, vocals, the lot!
Did you set out to achieve anything with it?
I really wanted to push myself and get out of my comfort zone with it: using new equipment, set-ups and techniques, using vocalists for the first time. Making tracks with other people outside of my inner circle of friends has always been a bit of a fear so I knew I'd have to tackle it head on, and I'm glad I did.
What was the experience like working on the album?
I much prefer working on albums, wins every time. Singles don't tell a story the way albums do. You can roll out a great single in a couple of months or even less, but you can't just knock up an album that shows who you are in just a few months, it takes a long time. This album has taken me about two years now, a lot of it was just finding what I wanted it to say and connecting the dots through hundreds of ideas. It's really taken me to hell and back, but I wouldn't change it.
