Total Science

Total Science have been a bit quiet of late on the release front but that's all about to change with forthcoming releases on Subtitles, Critical and Shogun Audio. Spinback tells us all about them and what's coming on their labels too...

Tell us more about your forthcoming singles on Subtitles and Critical...
The Subtitles 12" was snapped up a few months ago by TeeBee. The A-side, Venus Prime, is a collab with S.P.Y and is quite a dark techy affair. It was the first thing we all did in the studio together so it's a bit of a moment in history. The flip, Narrow Margin, is a collab with S.P.Y and Lenzman and is more of a roller but encapsulates a bit of all our sounds quite nicely!

The Critical 12" is on a completely different vibe. Kasra had taken Skinz, which is reminiscent of the old Bristol vibe, a while back and he wanted something different for the A-side. We had a vocal track called Redlines featuring Riya on the go so we played him the unfinished version and he snapped it straight up.

They both sound quite big releases, why didn't you release them yourselves?
Well, our sound has changed a lot over the last few years as we've took time out to go back in and develop a new direction. We had exhausted the vibes we were on around 2005/07 and then we lost our studio space so it was time to start from the ground up. When we had some quality produce we felt it was time to hit some other labels we respected like when we first started out. Plus, it's always nice to work with other labels and is something we've done from day dot.

Did moving from your old studio in 2008 set you back a bit production wise?
Yes, it did put us back quite a bit. We had been in our old studio for near on seven years and were used to the sound in there. We then had to move back to having studios in our houses and getting used to them. For Quiff, who does the mixdowns, it was a a massive task getting used to the new space again and it's taken a good while but I think we're getting there again.

What's your new studio like?

Quiff has set up shop in the spare room of his flat and that's where we do the final mixes. We've gone back to basics really, we each have nice small bedroom studios with a Mac and a few hardware synths.

What's coming out on your labels in the next few months?

On CIA we have a Tuned In 2 LP coming which will be a series of four or five 12"s with a CD to finish in September. The first 12" is a track by ourselves called Trespass and S.P.Y & B.T.K's Save Me. The artists that will feature on it will hopefully be Calibre, Nymfo, Lenzman, C.A.B.L.E, Zero T plus more. We also have a Zero T remix 12" which will be the Ulterior Motive remix of Zero T & Bailey's Robots and Zero T's own new rerub of Walk Away ft. Steo. On Deepkut we have FD & Script's Whitehorse and FD & Keza's Cougars. There is also a 12" from new boys Krakota and Judda with Solid Shout / Callow.

What are you currently working on in the studio?
We have quite a few collabs on the go with S.P.Y, System and Lee plus a load of our own stuff.

Done any interesting remixes recently?

We did a remix for BCee of the track Mr Bridigan ft. Jo-S which should be coming soon and one we were really happy with. We have a few other things on the go but none we're gonna talk about 'til they're done but we're kinda firing now so it would be nice to get some more in!

Anything else you want to tell us about?

Just to look out for the Shogun Audio 12" we did with S.P.Y, Gangsta / Above the Clouds. It should be out late April and another S.P.Y collab coming on Headz called Legion which will be out late summer.
