Tigerstyle

Tigerstyle are representing the bhangra/desi scene hard. Raj and Pops do things a little different, as their releases on Soldier Sound and Nachural  Records go to show. They're releasing their new Ay-Ha EP, and also have a free remix of a South Rakkas Crew track out now as well. We spoke to the guys for an inside track.

Describe the sound you’ve captured on the Ay-Ha remix.

With Ay-Ha! we've tried to go to extremes, so you have the pure traditional Punjabi bhangra percussion and melody on tumbi (one sting instrument) and algozay (double flutes) and then we flip the script and go all intergalactic with the 808 drums, wrap bass and synth lines.

How did those elements come together?

We've been making music for around 12 years now so we have a huge catalogue of live recordings of Indian elements, some of which we have played ourselves while others are sessions from great musicians we have worked with from the homeland. So it’s just first nature to put something together which sounds so raw, traditional and high energy, and then flip the sound, giving it a contemporary edge.

What other releases and projects have you got going on at the moment?

We're working on completing the album, titled Digi-Bhang, set for release early 2013, where we're lining up a simultaneous release in India, so just trying to get the final pieces of the puzzle in place. We have more singles and videos to come from this album still.....

Tell us about how you got involved in the South Rakkas Crew release.

The remix came about after discussions with the guys at Mad Decent. We have been in touch with Diplo for a few years now through our good friend Toy Selectah who is on Mad Decent, who encouraged us to get some of our material over to Diplo and the label. The guys heard our stuff and then offered to give us an opportunity to remix for their upcoming release which was Gangsta Revival by South Rakkas Crew. Luckily elements from a previous release of ours from our 2000 album The Rising titled Gangsta conveniently fitted with the South Rakkas elements, and fortunately South Rakkas Crew loved the sound we came up with for the remix and so the rest is history!!

What’s the radio support been like for your releases up to now?

It’s definitely been strong. The Bhangra scene are always fully behind us, and its great to have DJs like Nihal on BBC Radio 1 or Bobby Friction on BBC Asian Network dropping World Exclusives of our tunes, creating crazy hype!!! We have loads of bhangra DJs from across the world supporting our music. It’s also great to have DJs from across genres jumping on our sound as we're trying hard to push the sound over to new audiences, so support from djs at Capital FM, Kiss FM, Unity FM and all the other radios in the UK and abroad supporting our sound is amazing.

And what’s on the promo mix that you have out?

We always like to put together a little something to showcase our latest release, the remixes and some of the other tracks we have produced recently, mashup with all the other tunes we like DJing out at the time.
