Long-time jungle warrior Mampi Swift is back, and has an album dropping in a few months’ time. We asked Mampi about his new agents, his new tunes, and that new album.
You're a new addition to the Evolution Agency. Can you tell us how that has come about, and how you feel about it?
I feel really good about it! I've had some bad luck to put it mildly with agents - let's say I have a good feeling about this! In the long run the key is to have just one agent until I hang my headphones up!
You have a big tune around at the moment – tell us about this & some of your recent productions.
Yes the track everyone is talking about is ‘Gangsta’! It was made a while ago, but I felt the sound didn't fit in with what was out there! People were jumping on a new sound at that point so it was best to hold tight but now is obviously the right time!
Your album is set to drop in September. 2012 seems to be a year of hot artist albums, so how does yours add to this?
I'm not interested in anyone else! I know for sure my album will sound completely different to anything else that comes out this year! I think the ‘History’ LP is definitely my best album, I'm confident it will stand out!
It's just about good music, I haven't made tracks to specifically get played on daytime radio,
I haven't jumped on any particular sound because it's hot! It's my own sound - the Mampi Swift sound, which a few of the new producers have tried to recreate! Also the guest artists I have on the LP have made fantastic tracks - Gridlok with Warrior Code, hardcore DJs Breeze and Modulate with an NC-17 collaboration and a Blokhead remix on there also!!
You are a veteran with a long career, and you've seen all permutations of jungle/d&b. What are your thoughts on d&b circa 2012?
Well I'm just coming back this year so couldn't tell you too much of what has happened in the d&b scene over the last few years! But I do know people are ready for a change in the sound and also more importantly - MAMPI IS BACK!!!
What's next for the Mampi one, where can your fans catch you?
I'm gonna be touring worldwide, the main thing my fans would like to hear is that the double Mampi mix is in effect!!!
