Alex The Others holds the crown of most released artist on the Dub Police label. His recent single ‘The Way You Make Me’ has been hitting dancefloors, and he plans to continue his progress with a new album. Read on for more on the man and his music.
Hi Alex, how are you? Talk to us about the recent release, ‘The Way You Make Me’.
Yeah I'm good thanks, just finishing up my album at the moment. Basically I made 'The Way You Make Me' about a year ago and have sitting on it since then and working the album around that. Myself and the label always knew we were gonna hold it back for the album so it was just a matter of waiting till everything else was in place with the rest of the music from the LP before releasing it. So it feels good now that it's finally out there doing its thing.
You’ve managed to pull in some quite varied remixers. Tell us about who’s on the remix and what they bring to the track.
I met the guys from BeatauCue whilst I was on tour in the States, we played a show together and I played 'The Way You Make Me' as my last track and they were really digging it so that kinda just fell in to place. I'm a big fan of what S.P.Y.'s doing at the moment so we hit him up and again he was into the tune and I really love what he's done with it. He's definitely made it his own and given it a completely different angle from the original. The Original Sin mix was a case of him hearing it through Caspa, he said he was really feeling the tune so we gave him the parts and the results were really heavy. I think as a whole there's a nice mixture of remixes catering for whatever mood you're in.
You’re now the most released artist on Dub Police, so what’s it like to work with label and what do you think is the secret to your continued success with them?
I’ve been with the label from the early days, and it's crazy how much the label and dubstep as a genre as evolved. I've always just done the sound I like and the label are always 100% behind whatever direction I wanna take my music in. So as an artist you can't really ask for more, they give me complete creative control over what I do and I feel blessed to be surrounded by such talented artists who all share the same mentality.
Your album, ‘Red Planet’ is set to come out. What have been your main inspirations in the writing and production process? Where does the idea of the title come from?
I'm really in to films, and I kind of wanted to try and structure the album as a sci-fi, comic book type soundtrack, but with the intention of catering for a club environment still. Sounds a bit wild and ambitious and it has been very hard to stick to this guide but I feel happy with what I've got. I feel it's not too gimmicky but instead has a great theme that runs throughout the album. During the process of putting the album together I thought 'if this was a film, what would I call it?' And somehow got to the conclusion that 'Red Planet' was a good title.
I know we’d all love to have a crystal ball, but what do you think is next for The Others and Dub Police for the remainder of 2012?
I wish I knew. The way things are in electronic music as a whole at the moment is absolute madness. Things I never thought I'd see happen, have happened. Especially the way things have gone for dubstep in the past few years has been really intriguing to see how it has all unfolded and the unimaginable success and amazing music that has been created. I think for me I'm just gonna keep doing what I've always done and try my upmost to create music that myself and hopefully others can enjoy and see where this wave that’s sweeping through the world of electronic music takes me. I'm really excited to finally get my album out there, and I hope people will enjoy listening to it as much as I've had fun making it.
