The middle ground between the atmospheric side of liquid drum & bass and dance floor friendly music is hard to find. However, that is exactly what Red Mist Recordings boss Chris Hayes has set out to do with his latest compilation, The Red and The Black.
"When selecting tracks for the album, both Paul Moody, my partner at Red Mist, and myself wanted to really push that typical Red Mist sound," states Chris.
"We wanted to use deeper, more emotional tracks, but at the same time make it accessible in a club, which is really what we stand for. It's a two CD album, with the second being a mix by myself, to showcase some Red Mist releases, both past and present."
The Bassdrive Radio resident remembers being inspired by the sound of LTJ Bukem's Good Looking Records, and believes that his label, Red Mist Recordings, has updated the old school.
"I'd like to think we've taken a sound similar to that of Good Looking, and modernised it," he says. "The sound of the compilation takes in atmospheric, liquid and techy D&B, but everything has that common Red Mist feel to it."
The album wastes no time getting going, with a huge opening track entitled From the Wreckage, by promising producer, Antibreak.
Chris has been so impressed by the emerging artist, that he will follow The Red and The Black release, with Antibreak's debut album, entitled 11 Shades of Night, a project he's equally excited about.
"He's a fantastic talent, and we're buzzing about what we've heard so far," he enthuses, "the album will definitely take the label down a different route to the one we're used to. With quality producers like ASC, Instra:mental and dBridge making some brilliant, experimental music at the moment, we want to try and experiment ourselves a little."
The Red and The Black is out on Monday 15th February, with Antibreak's 11 Shades of Night following soon after.
