Playaz are no strangers to big releases, and the third instalment of the Flavours series is as big as they come. One of the men behind the label, Pascal, spoke to Kmag recently about the EP, and about the upcoming night at Fabric this Friday, 24th August. Read on to catch up with what he said.
Flavours 3 looks massive – tell us about the tracks on the EP.
The whole point of the Flavours series is to showcase a range of d&b, using different styles and different flavours (see what we did there). We want to show that Playaz Recordings enjoys every aspect of drum & bass and despite being labelled as purely jump up, we've made and released some dancefloor bangers over the years. Despite our manly exteriors, we have a sensitive side too.
How have you gone about compiling the release, and what are your thoughts about the EP?
We compiled this EP as we have done with the previous ones, by selecting tracks from a number of artists that try to cross a variety of styles. They are intended to show how diverse we can be with our releases and try to dispel any preconceptions people may have about the label. Don't just buy the EP because you love our label, buy it for the unique and original tracks that are on there. We want to champion real drum & bass, and this is exactly what you'll get with each of the Flavours series.
The next Playaz at Fabric is on August 24. Are you able to reveal anything of the lineup for the night?
As always this night will consist of myself and Hype along with a vast selection of Playaz artists guests. The full line up is here:
Room 1: DJ Hype, Pascal, DJ Marky, Sigma, Taxman, Sub Zero & Gridlok b2b Prolix with MCS: IC3, Skibadee, Stamina, 2Shy & AD
Room 2: David Rodigan, Shy FX, Funky Flirt, Bailey, Shut Up & Dance, Potential Badboy, North Base, Mach4 with MCS: Ragga Twins, Darrison, Junior Dangerous & SP:MC
Room 3: Rockwell, Lenzman, Lynx, Ulterior Motive, Shimah, Basher, Macpherson with MCS: Bassline & Justyce
When we take over Fabric in its entirety, it's always a roadblock event. You can find out more information about our carnival special from our website or Fabric.

Playaz seems to have been everywhere and done everything. What keeps the fires burning for yourself and Hype to carrying on driving forwards?
Our love for the music has been constant for well over twenty years now so if we didn't still feel the same about drum and bass, we wouldn't still be releasing tracks. When you see that the original of Peace, Love and Unity was released 16 years ago and we're now releasing a remix, it opens up our music and the genre to new fans, some of whom weren't even born back in 1996. It's things like that which keep us going, showing a new generation how we do. That and plenty of lighter fluid.
Thinking about this – what’s your favourite element of being behind Playaz?
It would definitely be being here from the beginning and seeing the label grow from nothing and into something. Everyone would like to say they do a job they love but not all are as lucky as us. We've come a long way since the start and it's pretty awesome to still be here, releasing tracks and playing out live. Now how many people can say that about their job?
