Northern Lights

DJ Steppa from Leeds-based drum & bass production outfit Northern Lights is starting his own label, Audio Warfare, so we spoke to him to find out more about it and what else he's up to...

Why have you set up Audio Warfare?
In order to create a brand of my own following successful releases on various different labels such as DJ Hazard's Radius. It will serve as an additional outlet for our music alongside that of Twisted Individual's Grid Recordings.

Tell us more about the first release....
Bad Boys sees jungle revivalist Serum team up with Kitcha and I (under our Northern Lights guise) using a big sample from Inner Circle paired with crispy breakbeats and booming bass. On the flip, House of Pain, Kitcha's in the picture once more and the pair of us tease out a filthy club killer that's full of moody vibes.

Got any other Audio Warfare releases in the pipeline you can tell us about?
An interesting project entitled Mr Nice features Kav Sandhu (formerly of the band Happy Mondays) and his self-titled group KAV as well as Welsh legend Howard Marks.

What else do you have coming out soon on other labels?
A '97 style roller called Murder One to help celebrate ten years of Grid.

What are you currently working on in the studio?
The appropriately titled Back To The Future is a modern-day take on jungle with cheeky samples taken from the film of the same name.

Done any remixes recently you can tell us about?
A dirty remix of Comedown by Spekky & Sensa, who originally sampled Eek-A-Mouse's reggae anthem Ganja Smuggling, for Motion Sensor Recordings.

Anything else you want to tell us about?
My website contains the latest Steppa related news, information and downloads.
