NoahD

After the Noah D remix project which was featured on Kmag earlier this year, four winners were picked by Noah D and SMOG to remix the lead track Just Right off Noah D's highly successful album Perspective. Drew from Smog tells us all about the remixes, together with Noah's history and that of the label and why things are being made available for free.

For those that might not be aware, please let us know more about the history of Noah D.

We've known Noah D from his days as a drum & bass producer and DJ from Portland. About five years ago he switched it up and started producing dubstep tracks for labels like Argon, Basshead and Subway. In 2009 he released a track called "Seeeriousss" for Subway Records that was an anthem that year. That sealed the deal and earned him a place as one of the great West coast producers. We then approached him and asked to release his album "Perspective" for Smog Records. He is now a part of the Smog family.

How about SMOG? Tell us about the place of the label in bass music in the US.
Smog has been on-going creation between myself, 12th Planet, and Danny United. It originally started out as a series of parties, that expanded into a collection of DJs and producers, which became a label, and so on. We were avid fans of dubstep music at a time where you couldn't go out to a club and hear the music. It's been six years since then and a lot has changed. LA has become a focus point for dubstep and the scene in the USA has exploded. We've hosted events and toured all across this country.

The remix EP looks huge. Give us a quick portrait of the original track.
The track comes off the album "Perspective" by Noah D which featured many vocal collaborators such as Newham Generals, P Money, The Grouch, Reva Devito, and Jahdan Blakkamore. "Just Right" which features West coast MC The Grouch (famous for his days with Living Legends) was one of the big tracks from the album. We created a music video for the track and decided to give it away free to our fans to promote the album.

How were the remixes and remixers selected?
We went to some of the people within our immediate circle and asked them to do a remix. People like EMU, Kelly Dean, and Djunya. Then we decided to expand the scope and host our own remix competition. We thought this might be a great way to discover new talent - and that turned out to be true.

Being that the original is a dubstep track, but there is a hip hop vocal from The Grouch, we knew there were a number of ways people could have taken it. We weren't necessarily looking for a dubstep remix, so it was cool to see how other people interpreted it. We were really happy with the results.

You are offering the release as a free download – why have you decided to do that?
We'd like to introduce the world to some of the great talent we have discovered.
