Please introduce yourself...
I'm Ash, I run Med School Music and the administration of Hospital Records' publishing company Songs In The Key Of Knife.
What have been the highlights of 2009 for you?
Med School in room three at Fabric in January was off the hook as was kicking off the Hospitality residency at Matter. It was sad to leave Heaven which served us very well but Matter is on another level. Musically, I have to say the Bop album although obviously I'm incredibly biased. Such was the quality of his music, once the tracks came in it really didn't take long for the album to take shape and it has turned out to be a big success for us. Big up Alexander and the Saint Petersburg massive! The Blu Mar Ten releases have been a breath of fresh air too, great album from those guys.
What have been the highlights of the decade for you?
Probably watching Tottenham beat Chelsea in the Carling Cup Final at Wembley in 2008, you have to take what you get as a Spurs fan.
How have things changed for you over the last ten years?
Ten years ago I had just started university and my involvement in music was pretty much limited to messing about fruitlessly on Cubase and going to gigs / clubs. Since then I've gone from street team flyering to working full time at Hospital via an 18 month stint at music distributor SRD. The whole time I've been massively into drum & bass (and a whole load of other music too) and I'm loving it as much now as I was then. More big acts seem to be getting exposure, which I think is great for everyone involved in the scene. It seems to have created space for the undercurrent of stripped-back minimal drum & bass to really flourish and grow.
What have you been doing recently?
Just finished building myself a new computer (I'm a massive geek and I used to fix PCs for a living). It's so fast it's ridiculous and it's hooked up to a beautiful 32" HD TV, maybe it's time to dust off Cubase and get back on the beats?
Which artists should we look out for in 2010?
There's so many wicked new artists coming through with new sounds, ticking lots of boxes for me are Randomer, Enei, Stray, Circa, Engage and Trisector among others.
What are your plans for 2010?
As I write this we're still locking down some of our plans for 2010. Having said that, I can definitely tell you about our first release of the year which will be a new various artists compilation to follow on from the New Blood (MEDIC7) double pack that saw Med School debuts for Martsman and Randomer. This time we're going to do a full CD as well as the 2x12" format, there is far too much good music coming in!! We are also looking into doing a Bop Remix EP and possibly another Trisector 12". Beyond that, you'll just have to wait and see!
What are you most looking forward to in 2010?
The World Cup in South Africa is up there for sure and I might be heading to Australia at some point. If I can find the money a new car would be nice too, my '96 Peugeot 106 is on its last legs!
