Krafty Kuts, the world's number one breaks DJ, is no stranger the mix CD, his 'Fabric' and 'Back To Mine' CDs gave listeners an insight into his roots in turntablism and crate digging. His latest for breaks label Against The Grain features an exclusive selection of Krafty "re-rubs".
Ever since the early days of dance music, pioneers such as Danny Krivit and Larry Levan and hip hop producers such as Double D & Steinski, DJs have made their own re-edits of tracks to add an element of exclusiveness to their sets. Usually however, those edits remain unreleased, never to see the light of day.
So, after the help of many artists and record labels, Against The Grain are able to release this CD containing 20 of Krafty Kuts' finest, unreleased re-edits which have been igniting his sets over the past year. Krafty tells us more:
Can you explain what your new compilation is all about?
Whilst compiling my Fabric Live CD and layering old music to make it sound new, I realised there was an opportunity to do this with some of the new tracks I was being sent. I was getting loads of music I really liked, but it didn't quite fit with the Krafty flavour, so I starting creating re-rubs of them with my own unique tweeks - adding fat beats, toughening up the basslines, arrangement and so. This compilation is essentially a chance to release all these monsters to my fans.
Any concept behind it?
It's an opportunity to mix my studio skills with my DJ experience, every track on CD1 has been given the Krafty Kuts re-rub treatment and then mixed by myself also. They're the highlights of what I'd play in my sets together in one awesome package. The CD release also has a bonus disc mix with 28 of Against The Grain's classic breaks, also mixed and mashed by Krafty Kuts, it's great to look back at these tracks and realise what a solid label Against The Grain has been.
How did you go about choosing the tracks that appear on CD1 of the album?
It was a very difficult job to select my favourites of the re-rubs especially with so many technical legalities that stood in the way. But after many a painstaking amount of phone calls I think we've managed to put a great selection together. They've all been key tracks in my sets over the past year, there's some real gems in there.
When is it being released and on what formats?
It will be released on CD on 26th October and digital download 16th November. A two track album sampler is out now and available exclusively from Beatport!
What else do you have coming out soon?
I'm currently working on a new album, more re-rubs and promo mix CDs whilst constantly evolving ideas around new DJ sets for upcoming tours in Canada, Australia and the USA. I'm also peicing together and DJ Tools iPhone app with Against The Grain Records, basically turning your phone in to an MPC style sampler! It's amazing, people can register their interest for this here, it should be out in November.
Anything else you want to tell us about?
Check out the two track album sampler out today on Beatport, two of my favourite Re-Rubs which have been going off! And there's plenty more to come, just drop an email to [email protected] and I'll keep you regularly updated on all things Kraftylicious!
