Klute

Although the name might suggest otherwise, Commercial Suicide continues to thrive after nine years of releasing records and has risen to become one of the most respected labels around.

Setting the standard with the debut release of his own Tranceformat, Klute's label has stayed clear of pigeonholes and built a reputation for original music with heart & soul as well as dancefloor appeal.

A steady flow of releases has come from scene stalwarts like Calibre, Break, Digital, Spirit, A.I. and Zero T plus up-and-coming producers such as Mindscape and Insight.

In 2006, the label released debut albums from Amit (Never Ending) and SKC (Killing Me Softly), giving each a creative platform and the chance to fully establish themselves as artists in their own right.

Commercial Suicide is naturally the home for much of Klute's own output too, with a new album set for release this year to follow Lie, Cheat & Steal (2003), No-one's Listening Anymore (2004) and The Emperor's New Clothes (2007). We caught up with Klute to find out what's in store for the label this year and more...

Do you have any personal highlights over the label's history?
Obviously releasing the first record in 2001 was very special. I was completely skeptical at that time that anyone would be interested but I was surprised how wrong I was.

Releasing Lie, Cheat and Steal was also a landmark for me as it proved to me I could release a full length album. This is what the grown ups do so I was well chuffed.

I'm very proud of what I've released on Suicide. I've always stuck to my guns in terms of releasing only what I like and not what I think will do well.

I'm proud to be working with like minded individuals like Amit, Break, SKC, all the crew in New Zealand and Budapest. We are the cult of suicide.

What's next up on the release schedule?
There's loads of stuff to come out on Commercial Suicide this year. In your shops as we speak is SUICIDE049, Mindscape - Razorsharp / Violator, and next up will be the sixth Klute album Music for prophet at the end of May, followed closely by a superb 12" from Nymfo. I've been working closely with Bardo to get the best record I can out of him and I believe this is the best material he's made to date. I'm very proud.

Following these we have more from Amit, Insight, another 12" from Mindscape and a pair of techy killers from The Upbeats... and then there's more, but I'll let you know later...

Previously, there's been T-shirts and merchandise too - any plans for more?
Yes, July sees the release of the first ever Commercial Suicide fragrance called Suicide. We're just waiting for the testers to arrive from France and if all goes well we should be ready to place samples in the fashion press by the end of June. We're all really excited to be the first drum & bass label to produce a stench.
