It is truly a bumper time for quality albums in drum & bass at the moment. The latest to land is the new Big Bad And Heavy album from V Recordings sister label, Chronic. The third instalment of the series is presented by Jumpin Jack Frost, who is helming over 23 d&b slammers, from the label's stable and beyond. Frostie is a legend in the scene, and we were lucky enough to catch him for an interview.
This is the latest in the series of BBH – what’s on this one, and how does it progress on from part 2?
The BBH series is a constant evolution with the label throughout all the stages within the music. We will continue with the series on our journey through drum and bass. This album is much deeper than the last instalments and we have tried to make it more appealing to a wider audience. There are tracks from Serum & Heist , Capone, Critical Impact , Level 2 & many more.
Tell us about the history of the series.
The first two BBH albums were presented by Mosus from (Need for Mirrors) & DJ Ruffstuff. Mosus did the old skool CD and Ruffstuff did the other CD with the upfront selection. Part 3 is presented and mixed by me.
Talk to us about some of the artists featured.
As I said earlier this album features Serum & Heist, Capone, Critical Impact, Level 2, DJ Chap, Afro kid , Ray Keith , Nu Elementz & many more . We had so many tracks to choose from but we felt the selection chosen represented our label in the best possible way . There are other tracks that are not on the album but are featured on the mix and these will be coming on separate BBH 12”s.
How does the V camp stay consistently at the front of the d&b pack?
Wow... That’s a good question. I have to say that Bryan Gee for me is the best A&R man in the game. His vision and hard work really makes our label what it is today. We just do what we have always done in regards to the music that we release and the application toward the way the label is run.
With you constantly hitting the road, where are some of the places we can catch the Frost and some of the other V crew soon?
We have a few events going on as well as our busy DJ dates . August 11th Planet V returns this time we are at Covert in Vauxhall Then on September 17th V Records kick start a week of non stop parties at the SUNBEATZ week in Ibiza with a night at Es Paradis.
What can we look forward to on the mix you’ve done to accompany the album?
The mix has a very special VIP of The Burial that is NOT on the album. There’s also a track called Back In Time by Nu Elementz that’s not on the album but will be available on a BBH 12” soon.
