JC from Bad Education is championing drum & bass in Leeds. The first release from the project is out this week, taking the shape of Resilient and Urchin, which are backed with the All Night Long VIP . As well as checking out the sounds and the video for Resilient, you can also have a look at our interview with JC right here. Photos courtesy of Christian Hoyle - ldpix.co.uk.
A lot of hard work has gone into the debut – what’s the road been like up to now?
Yeah it's been good so far. Everything starting to fit into place nicely now and we've had a lot of positive support. There's been a couple of stumbling blocks along the way but that’s to be expected from any project you do.
How did the hook up with Steppa come about?
Well I've known Zak (Steppa) for over 10 years now. We first linked up in about? 1998/99 I think. We was both studying at Leeds College of Music on the same course at the time. Since then we've both been involved consistently in drum & Bass in Leeds whether it be doing projects together or apart.
Give us a quick rundown of the tracks on the EP.
There's 3 tracks on the EP, two tracks of my own, 'Resilient' & 'Urchin' and the highly sort after Northern Lights VIP of 'All Night Long'. With the tracks of mine I really wanted to make two very different tracks, one more geared towards the dance floor and the other being something more unusual. And with some many people asking about the Northern Lights VIP we thought it only fitting to add that as well.
The video looks as dark and dirty as the music – tell us about what happened with the shoot?
With 'Resilient' not being so geared towards the dance floor we thought, why not give it some visual support? So we enlisted the help of the team down at FlipBox Creative who came up with the concept. I'm really pleased with the way it turned so big thanks to everyone involved.
What do you want the vibe of Bad Education to be?
Hmm? A consistently positive one I hope. It's all still kind of work in progress at the moment. Musically I normally set out to try an achieve a deep, dark, techy and dirty kind of sound, industrial too. But whether I manage to achieve that is another thing. Hopefully as things go on and I learn more an grow confident with my abilities and finished product I'll feel more satisfied I nailed the sound and vibe I set out to create.
I know you are going out to Outlook soon – what will you be doing there?
I've got quite a few things lined up at Outlook this year. On the Thursday night I'm gonna MCing on the Metalheadz stage. On Friday during the day I'm gonna be MCing on the Detonate boat & Momentum boat and in the evening MC'ing on the Momentum/Soul:union stage. Then on the Sunday evening I'll be MCing on the Dispatch boat and finishing off with a DJ set on the Audio Warfare stage. It's going to be a kind of special and memorable few days for me I think. I'm really looking forward to it and can't wait to get out there so big thanks to Simon and Ant and everyone else at Outllook for that.
