Available in all major stores this week, Charlotte's Song/If I Had by Furney is the first release from new label Sheer Velocity Recordings. The label, run by Mark Halflite, Danny Fridd and soulTec has more releases in the bag, all with a fresh and new feeling and outlook, with a focus on quality control, professionalism and a wide reach. The crew are veterans of radio, and are planning some label nights very soon. Find out more about their goals and aims right here, and catch a promo mix below.
Hey guys – let us know who’s in the Sheer Velocity crew and what you each bring to the table.
soulTec, Mark Half-Lite and Danny Fridd.
All 3 of us have been involved with d&b for a long time and have each been DJing and promoting events, separately and together and this progressed into Sheer Velocity Recordings. It felt like a natural step as we have very good relationships with many DJ’s, producers and fans alike and recognised the need for a quality label which will actually release music!
We all have different skill sets which has proved to be very beneficial for the label and means we can keep a lot of things ‘in-house’. We will not compromise on quality, but luckily we all share the same passion and are determined to make this succeed. We know it will be a lot of hard work! soulTec, being a graphic designer, is dealing with all the release artwork and the website design. We feel the label should have a strong brand and look. This is reflected in the cover art.
You have your debut release out now. Tell us about the tracks on it, and how you came to be bringing it out?
Yes the first release is 2 tracks from the mighty Furney. Charlotte’s Song and If I Had. Furney was always top of the list for us to release first. When we had got the idea for the label and the brand together we approached him with a view to getting some tunes for the label. Charlotte’s Song was the first track mentioned and we snapped it up straight away. Furney has a lot of music waiting to come out and it’s nice to be able to bring some of that to the fans. If I Had was a track that not many people had so was pretty fresh, we had heard it on a Hype show on Kiss FM so approached Furney about it for the AA side. It was available so that completed SVr001.
What about other upcoming releases and future plans for the label?
We have 2 tracks from rising star of liquid d&b Dynamic for our second release. He has tracks coming on Fokuz and its sister labels and also Good Looking records. So he is no stranger to fans of quality liquid d&b. soulTec had been in contact with Dynamic for a long time so was able to approach him about signing tracks to the label quite easily.
(soulTec) Yeah I had heard the first track, Sleepy Heartland, on Dynamics Soundcloud page. http://soundcloud.com/dynamic - it’s one of those tunes that just hits you straight away. The AA side for 002 is another Dynamic tune Momentary Switch.
We go international and very 70’s soul funk style with our 3rd release. A colab between mSdoS from Greece and Arp-1 from Spain, Soul Hearts. That is coupled with a solo tune from mSdoS, Disco Dancing.
Other than that we have tracks coming from Flaco & Glen E Stone, new guy on the scene Indeed from Poland, Stereotype from the US, much more from Furney and many other exciting artists that we are in talks with.
What is the focus of Sheer Velocity and what makes you stand out?
Our main focus is quality control. Tunes that stand the test of time. Sometimes it’s hard not to make knee-jerk reactions when you hear a tune. But we think you need to take a step back and give a tune some time. Fabio’s Swerve night is a big influence on the label. Liquid d&b has many sides and we hope to bring them all to the table. We want to throw some surprises in there, keep things interesting.
Hopefully what makes us stand out is quality and vibes. We also like to have a good relationship with our artists. Too many labels seem to sign a tune and then forget the artists.
I understand you all DJ as well. What have you go got coming up in terms of live work and label nights?
We are building the brand, working with great artists and next year will look at doing nights to showcase this talent alongside some big name DJs. You will have to keep your eyes and ears peeled for information on that front coming soon.
Danny Fridd is a resident at Liquid Sessions, which is a night run by PMX in Birmingham, so you can catch him at various nights coming up. All 3 of us will be playing at a Liquid Sessions, Cancer Research night at PST in Birmingham in November. More details for that to come. Check Facebook for details.
You can also catch soulTec and Half_Lite on Chris Interface’s Kool FM, Liquid Heaven show on Monday 24th. 9-11pm. Also if you want a regular taste of Sheer Velocity sounds tune in to soulTec’s weekly show on www.bassdrive.com Saturdays 1-3 PM.
Where can people find you or get in touch with fresh tracks?
You can get tracks over via AIM svrdubs which is on auto 24/7. Also www.soundcloud.com/sheervelcocityrecordings you can drop us a tune there and also check out what we have forthcoming or you can always send sendspace or yousendit links to our email info@sheervelocityrecordings.co.uk
While you are at it like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/SheerVelocityRecordings
Lastly, talk to us about the mix you’ve prepared.
Yeah the mix put together by soulTec who, it seems, has the most free time on his hands at the moment, is just a little taste of what’s to come on the label. Short and sweet.
