Alley Cat, aka Alicia ESP, is a DJ, producer and co-director of the ESP DJ agency. She recently added another string to her bow by starting her own label called Kokeshi.
Why have you set up Kokeshi?
Because I found some undeniable music. After years of working with other people doing label work and promo I decided it's time I did something for myself that's all new. I've got a P&D deal with the distributor ST Holdings so I'm really pleased they support what I'm pushing.
What's the concept behind the label?
I'm just releasing what moves me. But if pressed to categorise it I would say it's on the deeper minimal side of d&b and dubstep. It may go beyond those genres, have to wait and see.
Can you tell us more about your key artists?
In addition to showcasing my own music I'm pushing a young lad called Lung from Cardiff who at 19 years-old is making huge waves in the dubstep scene. He has a big following on the dustep forums and makes some really ethereal music. I'm also working with Kiat from Singapore who's an old friend and I've just signed a new guy called Irrelevant.
Forthcoming releases?
KGD 001: Alley Cat - Drum'n' Lace / Ice Box (d&b - out now)
KGD 002: Lung - Afterlife / Time (dubstep - out October 2009)
KGD 003: Kiat / Kiat & Alley Cat - The Missing Channel / Purple Clouds (dubstep - out late 2009)
Anything else you're doing you want to tell us about?
The Kokeshi ((pod)) Kasts have spent several weeks in iTunes new and notable section on the front page.
