Hyperdub, arguably dubstep's most eminent label, has finally released its compilation 5. Setting the tempo with five EPs from various artists on their stellar roster over the last few weeks, the 5 double-disc is head-honcho Kode 9's masterstroke.
One half of the CD draws from the label's boundary-pushing back-catalogue, including Samiyam's hip hop-inspired Return, Rustie's synth-laden remix of Zomby's anthemic Spliff Dub and Joker's G-Funk-inflected Digidesign.
The other CD offers a helping of new, tart freshness; UK house influences from Cooly G, a club of dub wielded by King Midas Sound, and the first sign of Burial since his last album, Untrue, hit the shelves in 2007. The shadowy, 2-step garage genius is back with a flourish, sparse drums and rolling sub-bass evoking the emotion and profundity of his eponymous first album, while the disjointed vocals that featured on his second LP are still employed here but with a decidedly melancholic mood-shift.
The compilation, a homage to Hyperdub's past as well as a beacon for future hope and anticipation, does what the individual EPs do not. '5' shows the versatility of Hyperdub, a label prodding at while swirling around myriad genres, in the process engendering new ones. 5 shows the label's inquisition, and its unexpected twists and turns in musical direction that have left fans guessing while still maintaining absolute quality control. 5 shows that Hyperdub is simultaneously an absolute power-house and one of the most innovative imprints in bass music.
