Headhunter

Headhunter recently launched his own label called Transistor so we quizzed him on this, his other forthcoming releases and his new live AV show...

Please introduce yourself...
I'm Headhunter from Bristol. Everything started in 2005 playing grime on a pirate radio show in the St Pauls area of Bristol. From this a friendship with like minded people such as Pinch, Jakes, Appleblim, etc followed. A label with house mate Tech Itch came around very quickly with my first two tunes, then Tempa got in touch to sign me over as an exclusive artist and from there things have got bigger and better with a number of EPs and an album now under my belt.

Why have you started your own label, Transistor?
I get sent so much stuff that I feel has a similar sound to what I do I can't help but want to put it out under my own label. It's just a natural progression really.

What's the concept behind the label?
No concept as such, at the moment I'm aiming to put out an artist and then put either a remix or a collab from myself on the flip.

How often will you put out releases and which other artists will be on the label?
I'll aim for every six months, the first release is with F, the second is DJG and the third is Jus Wan. I guess I'm taking it as it comes and trying to move with the times, pushing the sound of dubstep to newer and different levels

Tell us more about your first single with French producer F...

This tune is the reason I stated a label really. I had the F tune Night Dive for a few months and I realised I needed to put it out. So a year later it's finally come out and seen the light of day. F does have an album coming out sometime soon too, so do look out for that, not on my Transistor label but on the 7even label.

Tell us more about your forthcoming singles on Tempa and Wheal and Deal...
The next thing on Tempa is the Modeselektor remix of 'Prototype' along with 'Sex At The Prom' on the flip. Then a three track EP will soon follow suit. The tune on N-Type's Wheel and Deal label is a collab with me and DJG, I kinda forgot we made the tune then about a month ago I heard someone play it in a club. I asked the DJ who it was by... and to my surprise it was me and Dean! It's nice to have something the bigger DJs in the scene play that's not the aggressive wobble sound that has become popular with most of the bigger DJs.

In your blog you talk about a tune you've made called Footcrab that had the whole boat singing along to it at the Tectonic boat party at Exodus, tell us more!

Yeah, this is a tune that's pretty much 808s and a few vocals... footcrab footcrab... Currently getting played out by a few key figures in the scene such as Loefah, Ramadanman, Pinch, Jack Sparrow and Peverelist. Look out for its release sometime next year on a very sought after label.

Anything else you want to tell us about?
Yep, besides the Tempa and Transistor tunes, I have a bunch of remixes that are coming out soon. One on the Dubwar label, Pushing Red Label and Hotshore. And if you have chance look out for any live sets I am doing with visual artist 'Vector Meldrew', the idea is to use dubstep (live) with animated 3D visuals on projectors.
