If you want to submit your mix for consideration (drum & bass, hip hop, breaks or dubstep) you need to go to our Knowledge Mixes Group on Soundcloud (even if you don't DJ it's worth a visit as this is where you can download all the mixes). Simply upload your mix and we'll listen to them all and choose the best one each week. Our latest winner is Andy Hoffman with his Rock Up On Ya Doorstep Mix...

Please introduce yourself briefly...
Andy Hoffman here from Melbourne, Australia. I got into DJing in 2001 when I got given the Freestylers debut album 'We Rock Hard'.  From then on I was addicted to that funky broken beat sound and started going to Melbourne breakbeat nights like Gimme A Break, Fractured and Beats Working. I met some locals like Nick Thayer and the boys from the Rock Like This crew and in no time I was out buying my first set of decks. I started out playing underground warehouse parties and then Rock Like This, who are a production crew in Melbourne, invited me to jump on board and I soon had residencies at the biggest broken beat gigs in town.

What styles do you play?
I've got where I am playing breaks mostly with a bit of dnb and electro thrown in but over the last six months dubstep has taken over my Beatport shopping cart. Also loving the future beat sound but when I play out I like to play a lot of bass heavy darker dubstep tracks and squelchy wobbly glitchy breaks and electro.

Do you have any residencies?
I'm a resident at Rock Like This in Melbourne who have been putting on breaks nights for four years now. The sound has changed a lot in Melbourne and so have their nights. They get some pretty big names in town now covering many genres and this year has been huge with names like Reso, Elite Force, TRG, Skool of Thought, Deekline, Dopamine, Drumattic Twins and heaps more. Got some big ones coming up with the Stanton Warriors in town this month and next month, one of the freshest dubstep producers from London Sukh Knight is gonna be in town. Should be a big night of heavy, grimey beats!

What's the best gig you played in the last six months?
That would have to be Reso @ Miss Libertines. Massive night and the man absolutely smashed it in front of a big crowd that was so up for it!  BIGGUPS Reso!

What are the top three tracks in your record box right now?
In no particular order... N-Type & The Others - Technophobe, Crookers - Businessman (DZ Remix) and Smile On Impact - Stop! (Baron Von Rotten Remix)

If you could warm up for any DJ in the world, who would it be, and why?
Tipper, he's easily my favourite producer of broken beat and a big influence on the sound I like to play.

The crowd is flagging and you need an emergency tune to stop them all going to the bar. What would it be?
Zero - Emit/Collect, such a massive breaks classic and never fails to get the crowd jumping.

Have you got into production yet?
I've dabbled and worked on a few remixes with Melbourne producers Men Imitating Machines. I'm definitely keen to get more into it.

What's the next challenge for you?
To get a studio happening and start putting down some new tracks!

Tell us more about your winning mix...
My Rock Up On Ya Doorstep mix is one I recorded on Halloween using Traktor. It's a pretty bass heavy mix with a lotta bootleg goodness. If you aren't into dubstep yet then hopefully this'll convert you. There's plenty of recognizable tunes and samples in there. Here's the tracklist:

  1. Bassnectar - Cozza Frenzy [Bassnectar Mega-Bass Remix]
  2. Armand Van Helden & Dizzee Rascal - Bonkers [Doorly Remix]
  3. La Roux - Bulletproof [Foamo's Dubstep Remix]
  4. N-Type & The Others - Technophobe
  5. Simian Mobile Disco - It's The Beat [L.A. Boxers Dub Remix]
  6. Torqux & Twist - Dooms Night Dub
  7. Daft Punk - One More Time [George Lenton Remix]
  8. Simian Mobile Disco - Cruel Intentions [Joker Remix]
  9. Mikey B feat. Ill Bachelor - Still Dre [DZ's Bootleggin' It Remix]
  10. Kouncilhouse & Mickey Finn - Yes Man
  11. Tom Piper & Nic Corelli - Indisco [Bar 9 Remix]
  12. Crookers feat. Wiley & Thomas Jules - Businessman [DZ Remix]
  13. Marauder - Incognito

What's the dubstep scene like in Australia at the moment?
The dubstep scene is growing and growing in Melbourne with many weekly and monthly parties going on around town. There's a lot of quality selectors playing this fresh sound now. If you're in Melbourne and want to hear some quality dubstep, head to Subbass, Too Much and Rock Like This and you won't be disappointed!
