Flore is one of the main players in the French breakbeat scene thanks to countless remixes and solo releases on imprints such as Mofo, Ibreaks and Labrok. Flore's new single, 'We Rewind' / 'Feel Me' (featuring Rodney P and Shunda K of Yo! Majesty), is out now on seminal breaks label Botchit & Scarper and her debut album, 'RAW', follows in October. We caught up with Flore on the phone from her hometown of Lyon to find out more.
What can people expect on your new album?
I think this album is quite different from what people know from me. I tried to do a fusion of everything I like, 'cause I've always been a music lover. Expect the impossible!
Any concept behind it?
I've always been influenced by pop, in the large sense of it, so I really wanted to do electronic music songs. So there's different MCs or singers from different scenes. It's not really a concept, but it was my goal.
Is this an album a collection of dancefloor tracks or is it supposed to work more as a coherent whole?
I tried to do a coherent one. I'm a big fan of Roots for example, and I like the way every tune works together and makes a perfect package. I don't know if I've succeeded, but I tried not to make it sound like a compilation of tunes.
Did you set out to achieve anything with it?
I think I had something to prove to myself. I was a bit bored of doing singles or tunes for DJs. I've always DJed more than one style, so it was complicated for me to choose one music genre. And I think it was time for me to do a kind of fusion of what I like and something personal. And here in France, the scene is so different; I was sad to learn people didn't know me from my tunes but from my DJ sets. The DJ culture is not that important over here and there's no support from the radio.
What was the experience like working on an album instead of singles?
So different, you can just do whatever you want. The most difficult thing for me was to stop thinking of "intro at 1.30 min, then first drop, then second drop at 4 min, etc." It was such a habit ha ha! So I tried to do it more intuitively, if there's a drop, it's because the tune needs it and not because it's gonna sound good in a club and some tunes don't even have intros!
Who have you collaborated with on it & what was it like working with them?
I've been very lucky! So many and all so talented. In fact, I had all these artists in my head and craziest thing is that they all agreed! The first to say yes was Chickaboo and at the time it was such an early project! So many good things have happened since then. So, you'll find tunes with Rodney P, Shunda K (Yo! Majesty), Les Gourmets, Scalde, Vale Poher and of course my lovely Boo. Some of them are worldwide stars, some others are up-and-coming artists. Les Gourmets, Scalde and Vale Poher are all artists from Lyon and I always had respect for their work so they had to feature on my album.
