Deep, forward-thinking drum & bass imprint DSM is launching a digital sister label, label boss Stumasta explains why...

Please introduce yourself...
We are Deep Soul Music. We started up in 2006 and exist to promote deep, forward-thinking drum & bass. The label is run by me (Stumasta) and Subverse and we've known each other for years having spent some time running Sensor Records for Donovan 'Badboy' Smith.

Why have you set up DSMDigital?
The main reason is that we needed another outlet to release some of the amazing music we are sent on an almost daily basis. Releasing vinyl every month isn't really a viable option so we needed another format to allow us to get our music out there. It also allows us to work closely with a few core artists that we will be working with in the future, and it will act as a feeder of sorts for our vinyl release schedule.

Will it be different to what you release on DSM?
Not massively to be honest. Certainly we feel that all the tracks on the first EP are of high enough quality to be released on vinyl, but as said, it's simply not possible to put out all the music we want to on wax. We want to keep the music we release on DSMDigital of comparative quality to the stuff we put out on the main DSM label – we don't want the digital label to be a mere afterthought.

Tell us more about the tracks on your first EP...
As mentioned we are using the digital label to work closely with some core artists and the four featured on this EP we feel are real stars in the making.

Anile is really making waves at the moment, he's making so much good music at the moment it's unreal and the stuff people have heard from him is just the tip of the iceberg. Never Together is a bit of different style than people might expect from him but a really nice laidback track.

Sam KDC is another who's making some really good stuff at the moment. He's got a release forthcoming on 31 Records and the second DSMDigital release is going to be solo EP from him. How Long is a really deep, bassy tune and the vocal works really well, creating a kind of melancholy atmosphere.

Lust is a really clever tune. It kind of lulls you into a false sense of security before the Amen comes in which really drives it all forward. Again, Nether is definitely one to keep an eye on with more music coming on DSM and Soul:R

We have been working with Triad for a little while now, and their first 12" was released by us last year (Last Gasp b/w Fiasco). It really made people sit up and take notice and this is a kind of continuation of their sound. The engineering on their tracks is always of a really high standard and this definitely comes across in Assassin. It's got a really deep bassline that's perfectly complimented by the echoing synths and punchy drum claps.

What else do you have in store for the future?
It's all systems go here at DSM at the moment. After a few distro snags the release schedule is all sorted now until the end of June and is pretty much set in stone.

DSM014 is a 12" from Data – The Visitor b/w Baggage. There have a been a few delays with this but it's finally going to see the light of day on April 19th.

DSM015 is The Essence EP from Triad. This is shaping up to be one of our biggest releases, there's a lot of buzz about it at the moment with all four tracks getting plays from people like DJ Lee, Total Science, Lenzman, Rockwell, Data, June Miller, Anile, Loxy, Lynx, Consequence and SpectraSoul. This is going to hit the shops some time in May, with the exact date TBC.

DSM016 is a collab between June Miller & Anile (Glass of Greed b/w Induction) who have been working together pretty closely recently. Induction is actually Anile's favourite tune that he's made and it's sounding pretty damn good. This should be out in June.

The second digital release will be a Sam KDC EP and we're just putting the finishing touches to the third digital release now.

Anything else you want to tell us about?
We're planning a various artists EP series called Reflective Progression that should surface some time after the summer, and that will have slightly more dancefloor edge to it. We're also planning a little tour to go alongside this look out for that.
