Drumsound & Bassline Smith

Following their UK Top 40 hit with Utah Saints remix of What Can you Do For Me, Drumsound and Bassline Smith are now releasing new single Through The Night. Their last two singles (Freak and Close) also had success on national radio, and Through The Night, taken from the forthcoming album Wall Of Sound, looks set to continue this trend. We pinned down Drumsound and Mr Smith for a quick interview on the subject of the single and the album.

The new DS&BS single is going to be Through The Night. Why did you choose this particular track and what appeals to you about it?

After releasing dance-floor tracks "Freak", "Close" and then "What Can You Do For Me" a lot of thought went into the decision to make "Through The Night" our fourth single. We wanted to show as artists our sound has depth and can trigger emotions. There will be more to the album than just out and out smashers and we felt that 'Through The Night', with the addition of Tom Cane's vocal, was something that delivered that extra dimension to our sound and gave an insight to what is in store.

There is a wide range of remixes for the single - how did you go about selecting who would take this on?

We like to get a nice varied selection of artists who we feel would do a great job with the particular tune itself. We then sit down and see who, from that list, is available and if there is a budget for them. It's all about the overall package you produce nowadays which stands out from the crowd, so we aim to achieve a high quality cross section of bass music across the board.

What's the idea behind the video, which accompanies Through The Night?
After the lighthearted videos of the previous singles, we felt that we wanted a video that portrayed the depth and emotion provoked by the tune itself. We went through numerous treatments and came up with one idea we liked, about a young guy with a mysterious illness going on a warpath through the night with his girlfriend. We kind of wanted a darker more sinister storyline to this one and we are very happy with the result.

How does it feel, with the airplay and awards you've received, to have had so much success over the last twelve months?

We are extremely grateful for the amount of support we have had over the last year or so from the scene's biggest DJs and all our fans around the world. We never imagined we would get playlisted all 4 times and never in our wildest dreams imagined getting the coveted Radio 1 A-List record. After all these years we have always kept our heads down, grinding away narrowly missing out at award shows so we were unbelievably shocked when we won 2 this year at the national d&b awards. It was such a great feeling knowing that the people had voted for us for best track and best video.

We're excited to hear about the upcoming DS&BS album. Drop a little knowledge on that if you can.

The album is called "Wall of Sound" a homage to Phil Spector’s infamous recording style of the early '60s. We have taken over 2 and a half years to put together what we think is our greatest body of work to date and has some amazing vocal collaborations on it with the likes of Tom Cane, Hadouken, Ayah Marar, MC DRS, MC Navigator and the mighty Youngman.

Where will we be able to catch you guys amongst the summer festivals?

We just played at Glade, Isle Of White, Exit, Nass and Nozstock Festival. Next up will be Strawberry Fields (11th Aug) and Feest in het Park, Belgium (25th Aug).
