DJ Lee has been there and done it, several times over. Touring worldwide with the likes of Metalheadz, releasing a slew of huge tracks alongside D.Kay, and never compromising his sound, it's not hard to see why he's one of the most respected around. He's just announced he's relaunching his Atlas imprint so we caught up with him to find out why...
The last release on Atlas was your third in 2003, why did you stop releasing tracks on Atlas?
At the time I was just too busy DJing to give it the proper care and attention it needed. Plus the first release was the first collab with me and DKay and every other tune we did got snapped up instantly by another label before I could even consider putting it out on Atlas.
Why are you relaunching it now?
A lot of people always ask me what was going on with the label and I was just too busy or lazy to do anything about it. I made a new years resolution that I was gonna make it happen in 2010.
Tell us more about the forthcoming releases on Atlas...
The first release is two tunes by me, Total Science & SPY called Relentless & Useless and hopefully it will come out in June or July. After that's out I'm going to be signing some stuff by other artists and doing some more collabs. I just want to get this release under my belt before I sign a load of stuff. I want to keep the releases current and not sign stuff and then don't release it for months as I think that just annoys people.
What are you currently working on in the studio?
Right now I've got a few projects going. I've just switched to using Ableton so I'm still finding my feet. I'll be doing some new stuff with Total Science in the next few weeks too.
Who have you been collaborating with recently and who would be your dream collaborator?
Obviously SPY & TS as I said. My dream collaborator would have to be Kevin Saunderson, although I think I'd just sit there and watch him work, haha!
Anything else you want to tell us about?
Just look out for the label and a tour coming up to coincide with Atlas 004 release. also if your in the Oxford area you can check me at SS20 skate / snow / record store and check http://soundcloud.com/djlee for my latest podcast/mixes
