After a three year break DJ Flight's play:musik label is back with a bang in September, get the latest from Flight and enter our competition to win every release for the rest of the year...
Why are you bringing play:musik back and why did you have a break in the first place?
I didn't intend to have such a long break to be honest; after losing my 1Xtra show a series of personal setbacks occurred which kinda forced it to happen. I had to take a step away from music for a while, not be so immersed in things.
I took a photography course which was highly enjoyable and had my brain working again, now I feel like I have come back refreshed and ready to sink my teeth in once more.
To bring the label back now felt like the right time; not only for the reason of there being tracks needing to be released, but drum & bass seemed to be in a pretty good, healthy place - working at BM Soho has shown me that trends are changing; the deeper stuff has been doing well over the last eight months to a year so I thought if I didn't take the plunge now I possibly never would...
Tell us a bit more about the two new singles you're releasing...
They are split artist 12"s, part of a series I'll be doing called Up Next. The first features a track called Release by Beta 2 with Mosus & S.P.Y's Hundreds on the flip, this is out on full release (vinyl and digital) on September 6th.
The second has Survival's Ethereal backed with Envy by Proxima and is out on full release September 13th. Anyone wanting upfront digital versions should check http://playmusik.ithinkmusic.com - everything will be available four weeks before full release date here (meaning at the same time as vinyl promos), including some digital exclusives, etc.
Got any other singles in the pipeline for later in the year you can tell us about?
Play 008 is Apple Fingers and The Phlebass Consideration by L.I.S (aka Survival & Chris Inperspective) - just got the test presses back and they are sounding nice. Look out for promos in shops around September 13th. I've also confirmed 12"s by RedEyes and Dan HabarNam, which are both wicked and I'm very pleased about! There are some other bits and bobs awaiting B-sides etc, full info on those will come soon.
Can we ever expect to see a Flight release on play:musik?
Maybe one day in the future. I have been in the studio recently, with Craggz on engineering duties. The tune needs to be finished though so I'm not committing to anything yet. Hopefully an Alias 12" will pop up in the meantime, I just need to tie Breakage down long enough for us to write a tune together!
Anything else you want to tell us about?
