Cyantific returns on September 28th with a new single on his own label, also called Cyantific. Cyantific is now just Jon Stanley after his production partner, Matt Whitehead, left to pursue his own path last year. We spoke to Jon to find out more about the new label.
Cyantific is just you these days, how come you are no longer working with Matt?
Matt just had to go and do his thing. He's not someone you could get to focus on one genre. DnB always seemed a bit restrictive for him, too many rules. We're still going to work on some projects in the future.
Why have you set up your own label?
I had a lot of music burning a hole in my pocket. People needed to hear it. Timing wasn't right at Hospital, so I decided this was the best option.
Will you continue to release on Hospital and if so when is your next Hospital release?
I'm sure, but there are no immediate plans though. I've started this project, and I intend to at least give it a decent shot.
Who is involved with running it?
Kasra of Critical Recordings is running it for me. I want to be involved in every detail, he has the experience to keep me involved enough without taking up my studio time.
What's the ethos behind the label?
Just to release music I want to make. I don't want to say it will be this or that, then go and do the opposite for the next release. Past the next couple of singles, I don't know... that's the exciting part for me.
Tell us more about your first release...
Brighter Day is a collaboration with Logistics that we started a couple of years back. It's a pretty ravey vocal track. It's a track that's been a real labour of love. I've gone through three studio spaces in the time it took to make. I'm really happy with the final result though. The mix is just how I like it. It kind of set the standard for all my other stuff since. The other side is 88mph - an old skool two note bassline track that's been around a fair while. It's been a staple of a fair few DJs sets.
What was it like working with Logistics?
We're good mates, and both pretty chilled out people. And we have a lot of respect for each others ideas. It's a good partnership. We've been making some house stuff together over the last few months under a new guise. We're working towards getting that out there soon.
Any other forthcoming releases in the pipeline you can tell us about?
I'm finishing off the fine details of the second release right now. I think that will be a track called Obey that featured on the recent Pendulum Essential Mix, and a track called Bounce It that Andy C has been playing.
Done any remixes recently?
A few actually. I did one for Netsky on Spearhead, one with Wilkinson for Zarif that's out real soon. One for Kid Adrift with Wilkinson that's out now, and another one with Wilkinson of an RnB artist named Mumzy. Wilkinson and I have a sort of remix project that just happened by accident after doing a bootleg of Major Lazer. It works well for both of us.
Any plans for another album?
I have a lot of music on my computer. When it all seems to make sense and the time seems right, then sure. Right now I'm just going with the flow and seeing where the music leads me.
Anything else you want to tell us about?
I designed and put together a website, if you feel like wasting some work time head over to cyantific.co.uk. There are a few free tracks you can download too, because I'm nice.
