Blokhe4d

Maldini, Vegas and Uman are pushing the boundaries of electronic music with their new project Blokhe4d. Combining elements of drum & bass, electro, house and rock to produce an audio experience like no other, we spoke to them about their new single and a whole lot more...

Why and how did Blokhe4d come about?

Uman had moved from Switzerland to London and didn't have a studio at the time. He had sent us a few tunes that we were in to so we ended up in the studio a few times and things rolled out from there. The first thing we finished was Skyline which then got snapped up by Hospital. We ended up with a bunch of tunes and instead of releasing them all as collaborations we decided on giving the project a name. This spawned Blokhe4d.

Is this the main production name you're pushing at the moment?

Yes, this is it!

Tell us more about the tracks on your next single Last Days Of Disco / Fade Away...

Last Days of Disco was a tune that rolled out really quickly in the studio. It's a full on dancefloor tune. Maybe not a friend of your iPod but a definite friend to your ravers. Fade Away is a bit of a deeper tune. I guess you would say more techy. With an eerie vocal saying that all dreams fade away. Both tunes have been getting a lot of support from across the circuit.

Got any other singles in the pipeline for later in the year you can tell us about?

Well there are a bunch of things lined up to the album. What is up next is of course Last Days of Disco and Fade Away and then There is Golden Child and Great Cities (aka Grand Metro) which will be the following twelve. We won't spill the beans on more at the moment.

Great Cities is inspired by Simple Minds' classic Theme For Great Cities, tell us more about how it came about...

Paul Taylor, an old friend of Vegas, played the tune to him hoping to inspire. He did, and Vegas came home raving about it. So we got hold of it and both went in and did the tune in a night based around the pad hook. A friend sent the track over to Simple Minds, who liked it and allowed us to release it.

What are you currently working on in the studio?

A constant project is always the album. It's a mix and match of what we want to be doing in music and not just in drum & bass. We're working with a few friends whose music we love, like Prolix and Aeph and we made a wicked tune together with our friend Cabbie! I guess in general we are just having a good time in and out of the studio. With a constant vision of where we want to go in the back of our heads.

Done any interesting remixes recently?

Yes we have. We just finished a remix for Gridlok and El Hornet's Hollywood which we are very happy with. We recently did a remix for Pittbull and Honor Rebel too.

What are the plans for the artist album?

The plan is to get the right balance between tunes you want to hear out, at home or on your iPod, or at a festival. We all love that "big" sound regardless of what format it is in. It can be an electro tune or it could be a dubstep/dnb hybrid. The sky is the limit.

Making singles is one thing but with an album you have more flexibility. Many people don't seem to use this and just make a collection of singles. We don't want to do this. We want to work towards something that is thought out start to end. From studio to stage show. Many of the album tunes are centered around vocals. Two of the people we are working with currently are people that we worked with in old projects, Digital Nation and The Passive Resistance.

Anything else you want to tell us about?

There are a few things to tell you about regarding Bad Taste. Due to the success of Bad Taste 3 the fourth volume is in the process of materializing as we speak. Leading up to Bad Taste 4 there is a nice release schedule with twelves from a very talented producers the likes of Prolix, Aeph, The Upbeats, Loki, Audio, etc. There is a lot of really good music around at the moment!
