Atlantic Connection

Kmag touches down for an exclusive chat with Atlantic Connection as he fills us in on the details behind the long-awaited Love Architect LP. Featuring vocal collaborations from a selection of top-notch singer-songwriters, expect the 13 track album to span the spectrum of deep and soulful EDM in that inimitable Atlantic Connection style.

When we heard that a new Atlantic Connection album was on the way, we knew we were in for a treat but we were still blown away by the preview you shared with us. How long has the album been in the works?
There's quite a story to this project. I actually started writing an album in 2010, however none of the songs I wrote then ended up on this album, but the intention was production for 'the album'. I ended up writing two albums worth of material (something like 40 songs) with a lot of different vibes. After going back through it all, a certain sound emerged which I felt represented where I'm at now, and those songs made up the bulk of Love Architect.

You're past work has always been rather conceptually based - is there any specific framework you had in mind going into this project?
Over the past couple years I've really grown to love retro nouveau and classic psychedelic culture. Maybe it's a bi-product of living in southern California, either way that vibe is definitely thick on this project. I wanted to write something that reflected that era but also represented the renaissance of those idealisms within our current culture. The title just came to me, I had played around with a few temp names, but Love Architect just felt right. My music is often times about love, constructing that emotion for other people through music. Behind that construction is an architect and the architect builds love.

The album features a number of collaborations with vocalists, singer-songwriters, as well as a special remix from one of your favourite producers in the game right now - fill us in on the details and how it all came together.
I was blessed enough to work with an amazing host of artists on this project. Shannon Swain (NYC) is my go-to girl. Her voice has so much diva, soul and class. We've been working together for years now, and after I wrote Emerging, I immediately sent it over to her and we had vocals recorded and mixed within a week.

The legendary Tali graced the song My Love which has already gone into day-time rotation on New Zealand's George FM! Tali was here [in Los Angeles] during the World of Drum & Bass Tour and we linked up after the event, she came through to a studio I work out of, we went through some songs, she picked that one and knocked it out in about two hours, pro-status. It felt like a big tune right off the bat, so I contacted Kastle for a remix, who I knew would bring a totally unique element to the song's redux. He did his thing, it's an amazing remix, and am so excited that made it onto the album.

Last but certainly not least is La Luna featuring Sopheye from Miami. Sopheye is an extremely talented singer and song-writer and as soon as she heard the instrumental, she started working and turned out one of the best vocals on the whole project. I was really lucky as this whole album came together very organically, it took a while and it followed its own natural course but I think that's what needed to happen for it to become what it is.
