Unity In The Community

Unity in the Community is an event aimed at providing a platform for producers to come together, help each other and share tips. With the legendary Loxy set to provide his own unique insight into making beats, we thought it was only right that we should see what it was all about...

What exactly is Unity in the Community?
Unity in the Community is a day of music production workshops and seminars for budding producers. Originally started as a project for the Self Expression and Leadership programme (a programme on the Landmark Forum), the day was born out of a love of music and a passion for sharing and teaching others.

It's from midday till 6pm with a BBQ afterward (weather permitting), at the East Oxford Community Centre, Princes Street (just off Cowley Road), Oxford. It's on Saturday 28 July 2012 and we're looking for a donation of £5 to Sobell House Hospice. We're aiming to raise £1,000 in total.

What was behind the decision to raise money for Sobell House?
Sobell House is a hospice and it's where my gran Iris went just before she died. She had such a beautiful way about her before passing away. She was painting and drawing, sowing… she had a passion for life and a love of fun things. They made that all possible. They are also looking after my mate Steve's mum as well. Trust me, they are a fantastic organisation and are also local to Oxford

You've managed to enlist the help of drum & bass legend Loxy. How did you manage that one?
One of my best mates just happens to be Loxy's driver. I asked him to ask Loxy if he was available and he was. I'm really excited to have one of the legends of the scene representing at our event. We've also got Philbee (Director's Cut, Bizzy Bass Recordings) and Mr. Lager (Sub Freq Recordings, Dubstep Allstars, Various Productions) coming to share their skills.

You've also promised support from Wyatt Noise Recordings producers on the day. Is that your own label? If so, what's the story behind that one.
It sure is. We're launching in September and we've got some fantastic new artists lined up, including GDS, Smokey and Bolo and PPK. The label (which has been nothing more than a thought rattling around my head for 15-20 years) came about through my desire to get music from the talented group of friends that I have out into the world. In fact, I've just sent the final mixes for the first release off to Stardelta for mastering. We've got a launch party on 8th September at the Bullingdon Arms in Oxford. The night is in conjunction with Terraforms and we've secured none other than Break as a headliner… I can't wait!!!

On the day there will be a couple of producers and DJs from my label representing and supporting, as well as some of my good friends. Everyone will make sure things run smoothly on the day - from production feedback to making the tea, we'll all be chipping in and helping out.

Do you produce music yourself?
I do indeed. I've been producing since 1999 when I bought my Akai sampler. I'm 100% in the box these days and like to get in the studio once a week at least. Check out the label's Soundcloud page for previews of the first release, which includes a track from myself.

Is the event aimed at those of a certain ability or do you hope to get a wide range of people involved?
It's aimed at everyone – from beginners to experienced producers. We're aiming to raise £1,000 for charity so the more the merrier!

How would you describe the drum & bass scene in Oxford?
It's pretty great actually. There are loads of people representing and there is something to go to pretty much every weekend. From the soulful and deeper vibes at HQ, to the jump up at Selecta, and for everything else in between there's Terraforms. Not forgetting the very popular midweek student night Free Range and Carbon Club, with its mighty Function 1 sound system, is a wicked venue as well with a host of drum and bass nights representing.

If this event is a success, is this something that you would consider doing on a regular basis?
Hell yeah! I'm in the process of setting up the Oxford School of Sound with the intention of doing just that and more. Watch out!
