Kmag Sabre Remix Competition

Recently we held a remix competition to remix an exclusive Sabre track, One Hundred Teeth. We got a great response with the track itself downloaded 2869 times, some of the parts receiving over 1500 downloads and 197 producers submitting their remixes.

These were judged by Sabre, Kasra @ Critical, Adam @ Backdrop PR and Colin Steven, the editor of Kmag. Again the amount of quality entries made it difficult to choose a winner but in the end we went with Dominic Ridgway's effort. Check it for yourself...

Dominic Ridgway

We spoke to Dominic Ridgway (above) to find out a bit more about him...

Please introduce yourself...

Hello, my name is Dominic Ridgway, I'm 22 and from south east London.

How long have you been making music?

I started making music when I was at school, but not seriously. I've had Logic about two years now. I'd say it's only in the last year that I've made anything decent.

How would you describe your music?

I would firstly describe it as deep, very deep... maybe sometime too deep... and cinematic. I like to create warmth through soundscapes that encapsulate your mind. I wouldn't say my music is created for dancefloors at all.

It's been described as after-party music, I guess it fits? I just love making music, I don't think 'right I'm  gonna make something deep or dancefloor friendly', it just happens.

Tell us more about your winning remix, how did you approach it?

From the offset I wanted to do something a bit different, not only to fulfill the brief but also to push myself to a new level of deepness that I've not achieved before.

I tend to get most of my ideas down in an evening then spend a few days tweaking / editing.  For this one I actually started it three times before I actually made the final one, they were just not deep enough.

To be honest I thought my entry may have been too out of the box. The one I handed in is probably a bit darker than the stuff I normally make but I wanted to keep with the theme of Sabre's album and I reckon that I have managed to achieve that.

Which track by any artist do you wish you'd made and why?

dBridge - True Romance? Logistics - Together? High Contrast - Racing Green? Phil Collins - Take Me Home? Too many to choose one really. I think in terms of Logistics and High Contrast they were the two producers in my mind that created that 'Hospital' sound we all know these days and if it wasn't for that I probably would be listening to house or techno to be honest.

I'm not the greatest fan of the harder dnb, I still appreciate that scenes need variation to grow and develop though.

What are you currently working on?

I've just finished an EP for Extent VIP which is coming out soon and I'm working on another EP for Urban Poetry. I've got many many collaborations in the pipeline including ones with Eleven8, Metro, Getz and Nuage, City Life, Integration Now and Ultracode. If I've missed anyone on there I'm sorry, actually got loads on.

Do you have anything coming out soon?

Yes, as I said I've got two EPs coming out before the end of the summer hopefully. Got a vinyl coming out on Lifestyle Recordings by the end of the year. I've got a track entitled We Are The PPL Of The Revolution coming out on an EP on Dubkraft as well. There will also be a string of releases on Silk Recordings this year too, first one will be Dakosa's remix of my track Beauty Falls which is already out on Silk Recordings. Keep an eye out for Eleven8 and I collaborating for Silk too, some seriously different music in the pipeline with him.

Where can people hear more of your music?

The best place to hear my music is on SoundCloud, I'm  always posting new clips for feedback and constructive criticism. I've also got a radio show on Extent Radio every week, normally Thursdays.

What's the next challenge for you?

To play out more for a start. I'm playing in Barcelona in June but need to get booked more. I'd like to get a live set-up going of not just my own stuff but producers I'm close too, kind of how Richie Hawtin does. Oh, and to get onto Darkestral or Cylon, I think I would die a happy man if I got something on one of them.

Anything else you'd like to tell us about?

I love ambience and soundscapes way too much and would love to get into doing film scores in the future. I've also got plans to start an electronica label purely to showcase the talent that is out there these days. The label would be taking a step away from drum & bass and more into the experimental realms of deep bass music. I don't want to destroy dancefloors, but release music music that is creative, deep and forward-thinking.

Dominic will receive £1000 of Addict clothing plus a SoundCloud Pro Plus account. The three runners-up who will receive SoundCloud Lite accounts are Enei, Cuelock and Sphere:

SABRE - ONE HUNDRED TEETH (ENEI RMX) by Enei

Sabre - One Hundred Teeth - Cuelock Remix by Cuelock

Sabre - One Hundred Teeth (Sphere remix) by Sphere

Big thanks to everyone who entered, all the judges were really impressed by the high standards. Check the rest of all the entries below...
