As part of our Sampling Season we held a remix competition with Shogun Audio to remix Icicle's Time To Remember. We got a great response with the stems receiving well over 1000 downloads and in the end 127 producers uploaded their remixes.
These were judged by Icicle, Friction and K-Tee @ Shogun, Adam @ Backdrop PR and Colin Steven, the editor of Kmag. The sheer amount of quality entries made this a difficult process but in the end we went with Thorne's effort. Thorne managed to maintain the character of the original but made sure it had his own identity too, the sign of any good remix. Check it for yourself...
We spoke to Thorne to find out a bit more about him...
Please introduce yourself...
My name is Matt Sellers. I'm a 22-year-old freelance graphic designer from East London and have just recently graduated from university.
How long have you been making music?
If I am honest, really not very long! It's been just over a year since I started producing 'properly'. I have always had a passion for music since a very early age though. I can remember going mad in my baby bouncer to my dad's "Breaks, Bass and Bleeps" CDs when I was just a nipper. I think that's where it all began.
How would you describe your music?
Usually I try and make music that I would like to hear. I tend to write deep basslines and give the beats a lot of room to breathe. Spacious is a good word.
Tell us more about your winning remix, how did you approach it?
When I first got my hands on the stems the big thing I kept thinking was "turn it on its head but keep that dancefloor edge". A lot of time was spent refining the bassline to reflect this. I also wanted to add my own personal stamp on the remix and not just stick with the samples provided. This was the quickest track I have ever written, but the longest I have ever spent refining!
Which track by any artist do you wish you'd made and why?
SpectraSoul - I Was 10 (SGN:LTD). This track gets drawn every time I mix and will most likely stay in the bag for a long time to come. The production is spot on and it seriously gets the crowds moving. The SpectraSoul boys can do no wrong!
What are you currently working on?
I have got a few collaborations ongoing at the moment. A few names include Mortem, Circa, Arkaik, Skematix, Eleven8 and Lurka. I am also working on getting my EP for Break-Fast Audio sorted. Watch this space!
Do you have anything coming out soon?
As mentioned above, the EP on Break-Fast and a release with Broken Audio. Both hopefully will both be out sometime in 2010.
Where can people hear more of your music?
The best place to hear my stuff is on Soundcloud. Never really have been one for MySpace.
What's the next challenge for you?
To keep pushing my production to the next level. I am still very much in a constant learning curve at the moment that I hope will never end. I'd love one day to get a release on Metalheadz. That's my aim at least. I would die a happy man if that became a reality!
Anything else you'd like to tell us about?
I absolutely hate butter. Oh and I get woken up at 8am everyday by jackhammers thanks to the 2012 Olympics.
Thorne will receive £1000 of Fenchurch clothing, a Shogun T-shirt, Icicle's Cold Fear EP and free guest list to the next Shogun event at Fabric in January.
The competition was so successful we're already thinking about the next one. We're looking to do 3 or 4 a year and we'd like your input and feedback on tracks and artists you'd like to remix and ways to improve the competition setup. Let us know what you think here.
If you'd like us to email you when we launch the next comp, sign up to the newsletter.
Big thanks to everyone who entered, all the judges were really impressed by the high standards. Check out all the entries for yourself...
