Top Videos July 2012 Part 2

24 Jul 2012

Yesterday we brought you the first ten of our twenty favourite videos for July 2012, s without further ado here are the rest.

Jimmy Edgar – Let Yrself Be
This latest offering from the Detroit based electronic music act comes from his Majenta album, released earlier this year on Hotflush Recordings. A simple but effective series of visualisations full of symbolism and cryptic messages accompany a fresh sounding garage and house influenced track.

Scuba – Ne1Butu
When compared with Scuba's previous efforts, which have cemented him as a dubstep/techno crossover pioneer, it's safe to say a change in direction is apparent in this track. 'Ne1Butu' is the second single from his acclaimed third album Personality and is, frankly, rather weird! Within the video this is also very much the case, though it remains a fun effort. Painted with a kaleidoscopic colour palette and imbued with a healthy dose of nostalgia, it pays homage to the '80s funk and '90s rave influences that run throughout the track, travelling back in time to a cult youth program some might have heard of named Dance Energy.

Native Sun – Gallery Of Dreams
Native Sun are a London based duo consisting of bilingual rapper Mohammed Yahya, born in Mozambique, and singer-song writer Sarina Leah. This track comes from their new album Indigenous Soundwaves, and is part of a rapidly growing buzz surrounding them on the back of their completion of a six week tour. It's a laid back hip-hop track full of soul and melody, complimented by a well-shot video set in an urban landscape. The artists bounce off each-other delivering commentary in their differing styles in a hope-filled tale of wasted youth and ambition.

Lefty – Chemical Escape
This track is taken from a compilation by an up and coming London based group of rappers known as Legionnaires, released in January as the first of a series of monthly mix-tapes. Regarding the accompanying video, expect some laid back UK hip-hop through a fish-eye lens.

Om Unit – Dark Sunrise (feat. Tamara Blessa)
This one comes from the 'Aeolian EP', London based bass producer Om Unit's third release on Civil Music. It features Tamara Blessa, who has been making a name for herself over the past 12 months, notably also working with Spectrasoul on their highly anticipated debut album. Musically it mashes together different genres, keeping a plodding, melodic groove throughout which is enhanced by fluctuating, emotive vocals. The official video fits the bill nicely, juxtaposing shots of Tamara Blessa doing her thing with impressive, and somewhat cinematic, shots of the London landscape during a beautiful sunrise.

Major Look – Bass Generation (feat. The Ragga Twins)
Major Look (producer Crystal Clear and MC/vocalist Stapleton) debut the video for their latest single 'Bass Generation' here. Featuring the renowned Ragga Twins, it's to be released on August 19th on the recently re-launched Universal imprint, London Records. A drumstep influenced, reggae-tinged track with plenty of attitude. Expect to see a Major Look Vs China food fight, which depicts Stapleton getting smashed in the face with a spring roll and baked beans galore.

Shadowbox – AM
Here we have a track by an up and coming Brooklyn based producer Shadowbox, from her forthcoming 'Haunted By Colors' EP. The video, directed by aspiring film-maker Matt Kliegman, is intended to be seen as a landscape representing the troubled psyche within a never-ending dream. The film-noir style, featuring mysterious figures and never-ending escalators, compliments the smooth electronic and eerie vocals perfectly.

Maverick Sabre – These Days
There's a classic trip-hop vibe to be found within this soulful and upbeat tune from a newcomer on the music scene; a recent signing for Mercury Records. The video is simple but thought provoking; lost and lonely figures staring intensely at the camera, leaving it up to the viewer to work out their story. The powerful and uplifting chorus driven by the Irish/English singer-songwriter's gripping vocals should certainly stay in the head for a while after listening!

Aesop Rock - ZZZ Top
This one's the second single from acclaimed alternative hip-hop artist Aesop Rock's most recent album Skelethon, now available. Expect to find the California based MC's distinctive flow and lyrical integrity continuing as he provides a further example of why is one of the most respected figures in underground hip-hop. The accompanying action packed video, featuring martial artist Patti Li, is filled with suspense and thrills; and fits the experimental production style nicely.

C2C - The Beat
Anyone who's heard of C2C will know the French quartet are highly regarded within the world of turntablism. This official video for their newest single (from their recent Down The Road EP) pretty much shows them doing what they do best – scratching it up and utilising the decks and mixer in an obscenely, complicated way; leaving any aspiring DJ open mouthed and feeling vaguely inferior. It accompanies a track which nods to the classic US hip-hop style of the 1980s, full of cuts and vocal samples, and to spice things up, the video is stylised brilliantly. Enjoyable from start to finish!
