Top Ten Videos August 2012

This month features a masked villain, puppets on strings and a landmark 50th release. We begin at the drum & bass scene...

DJ Marky – Ya Thing

This one’s released on an imprint set up by the acclaimed DJ Marky: Innerground Records, now celebrating its fiftieth release. Who better to represent this landmark moment musically than label founder and Drum & Bass veteran Marky himself! Surprisingly, it’s the Brazilian’s first ever solo effort. A well shot, dreamy video accompanies this trademark roller with its distinctive and rousing vocal sample. Look out for some interestingly masked ravers.

Makoto – Another Generation

Makoto’s latest E.P. is out now on the revered electronica label Apollo, an ambient division of the even more esteemed R&S Records. The video for the Japanese producer’s latest effort boasts impressively hypnotic visuals, which are apparently based around the idea of spilled milk. Furthermore, a black versus white colour contrast throughout acted by different characters compliments the driving, energetic tune nicely.

JJ Doom – Guv’Nor

JJ Doom is the collaboration between world-renowned rapper Doom (previously MF...) and Jneiro Janel. ‘Guv’Nor’ is taken from their album ‘Key To The Kuffs’ which is currently available worldwide. The instantly recognisable, masked hip-hop pioneer Doom dominates proceedings in the video, delivering his slick verses to the camera whilst backed by a kaleidoscope style camera effect.

Lynx & Hellrazer – Locked On The Low (Feat. Naomi Pryor)

Musically, it would seem Lynx is straying into Dubstep territory with his first release since last year’s ‘Devil’s In The Detail’ album. The UK based producer has expressed a wish towards making more radio friendly tracks, and with airplay and DJ support from the likes of Friction, Skream and Benga; it’s safe to say Lynx is well on his way. The success of this track has been, in part, due to the commercially accessible, emotive vocals of Naomi Pryor. The video showcases her talents interspersed with the dealings and goings on within a shady poker game.

Jack Beats – War (Feat. Diplo & Example)

Electro-wobble territory here, accompanied by a stylised and captivating video full of cartoony characters. The music is from ‘Careless’ the forthcoming mini-album by Jack Beats, courtesy of the Owsla Label.

Thology – Go There

Thology’s debut release comes in the form of the ‘Introspect’ E.P. on Synchronicity Records. The bouncy, melodic vibe within this steppy track shows this young producer’s potential. The musical quality is enjoyably complimented by a well crafted video; chock a block with colourful, paint-splattered, oozing speakers.

Daat – Orange Line

Some tranquil Drum & Bass music here by a group from Montreal, Canada; recently out on Offshore Recordings and Organic Beats respectively. The video fits the experimental style well: set on an over-ground train line presumably in Daat’s hometown, it follows the journey of an apathetic looking young woman.

Verbal Contact – Get Stoned (Feat. Left Leberra)

A laid back hip-hop flex in this track is complimented by an inventive, hazy video full of plasticine puppets on strings. The tune is taken from the Leeds-based rappers’ album ‘Blue In The Face’, soon to be released.

The Eyes - Harder

There’s certainly a message within this ragga-tinged, acoustic guitar influenced track, out on Estate Recordings. It’s the first single from The Eyes’ forthcoming album, and the unnamed vocalist delivers the heartfelt lyrics to the camera in this official video, contrasted with scenes of social unrest and political signifiers.

Touchphonics – A million pieces (Feat Alex Lee)

This track is taken from the forthcoming Touchphonics album ‘Destroy All Lines’, which is to be released at some point in September. Clicky, interesting production is enhanced by a dynamic video which features vocalist Alex Lee showing off her voice juxtaposed with some artistic montages.
