Subeena is a name to remember. With a recent release on Planet Mu, her fantastic Outland show each month on Sub FM, and numerous live dates across the country, she is fast establishing herself as one of the best female artists in the country at the moment.
I caught up with her shortly before she played at Audio Discharge on Thursday December 3rd. We popped into a cozy, traditional pub just a few minutes walk from the club for a chat...
How was working with Jamie Woon and Sa-Ra's Om'Mas Keith on Solidify?
I was at Red Bull Music Academy, which encourages artists to integrate with one another. The actual track came together in one evening pretty much. I had worked on the beats and effects for the track within a couple of hours, and then finished writing the track with Om'mas Keith adding the Rhodes melody to the track. We then got Jamie Woon to record some vocals on the track on the same night.
How does it feel to have a release on Planet Mu?
I had followed what Mike has done with Planet Mu for about four years, and have sent quite a lot of tracks to him over the years. Oddly enough, I didn't send Solidify over to Mike, instead he found out about the tune, and contacted me about the release within a few days. It feels great to get a release on the label.
What were your earliest influences on your style of music?
Early Bjork and Jamiroquai were very big influences as a child. I also had phases of listening to various bands and bits of hip-hop, though that was a bit random at times! Some of the earlier releases on Warp records were very important to me. The likes of Squarepusher, Aphex Twin and Chris Clark had a big impact on me when I was younger. Both my parents were also violinists, so that was an important part of what has formed my love for music as well.
At the moment I've been listening to a lot of Jan Jelinek, which is a bit of an escape from the usual style of music I listen to. Jan Jelinek has written some beautiful ambient techno, and I find it really relaxing to listen to. I am also a big fan of Hyetal's newest releases, and have been re-discovering a lot of Prefuse 73.
What was it like moving from Berlin to London?
After moving from Turin to Berlin, I decided I would move to a place where I already knew quite a few people. I had visited London a few times before and became friends with Jamie Vex'd over a period of time, along with a few other people, so I decided that London would be my choice. I originally moved for just one month, to see if I could get a university offer, and find work at the same time. Thankfully, things came together and I managed to secure a place at university and get a job within a month. I haven't really turned back since.
One of the key factors for the move was the difference in music scenes in the two cities. I found that London has a lot more going on each night, and the scene is a lot more diverse than that of Berlin. I have been going out a bit more since the move to London, which I have drawn a lot of influence from, it has been quite inspirational!
Any recent parties which you have enjoyed?
I really enjoy the Night Slugs nights in London, Bok Bok throws some great parties. The FWD with Jackmaster was amazing as well. Jackmaster is one to look out for at the moment. Possibly the best party I have played was 2562 launch at Corsica Studios. It was great to see so many people packing out the second room when I was on.
How are the shows on Sub FM going?
The Outland shows are going very well. I am more than content with one a month at the moment. It is nice to have such a large collaboration of different genres on one show. Photonz did a fantastic job last month, with a nice blend of house in the mix. I am looking forward to Desto and Shortstuff, who are appearing on the show quite soon.
