New Forms by Roni Size & Reprazent is one of the best-known drum & bass albums, and with good reason. Combining jazzy samples, deliciously funky breaks and experimental song structures, it represented a new height of maturity in drum & bass. The album deservedly swooped the coveted Mercury Music Prize in 1997, leading Roni Size and his band to be celebrated all over the mainstream media in the years that followed.
Like many Bristol-based artists of his generation – he grew up in the same suburb as Tricky and Massive Attack – Roni Size frequently samples jazz, funk and world-music artists. One of the most prominent samples on New Forms is on the final track, Destination. The intro to this feel-good, summertime roller is lifted wholesale from Each and Everyone by Everything But The Girl.
Each and Everyone is the first track from Everything But The Girl's debut album, Eden, which came out in 1984. It's a dreamy, lounge-music number which sums up the kind of jazz-pop the band were famous for – slightly languid, but with an accessibility that helped the album reach number 14 in the UK charts. Roni Size took the warm horns from the intro and simply repeated them, sped up slightly, to provide the opening to Destination.
Although Everything But The Girl made their name with jazz-pop, they experimented with electronica in the 90s and at the time New Forms was released were involved in the trip-hop scene. Perhaps their most famous track, Missing, was hugely popular at this time, mainly due to the runaway success of Todd Terry's house remix.
