Hektagon is an interesting producer; raised in Spain, but now living in London, he's drawn on a wide variety of musical influences to release his LP, simply entitled London, as homage to his current home.
The record includes audio snippets recorded whilst living in London, including supermarkets, the Tube, and just everyday life in the city itself. The LP is definitely one to look out for, released on Freaks of Nature, it contains guest appearances from Creamo and Vincent Kane.
The album itself is predominantly dubstep orientated, but with hints of grime, electronica, garage and hip hop showing in some of the tracks. Knowledge chatted to Hektagon about life in his new home, his favourite places, and the quest for that perfect bass sound.
As the title of your new LP suggests, the LP is all about London, but can you describe any particular experiences of life in London, and whether they are relevant to any of the tracks within the LP?
When I make music I get influenced by what is around me, whether I am happy or sad has a really strong effect on my songs. This album represents my love / hate relationship with the city including moodswings, rush hour, sense of amusement, feeling trapped, the struggle, etc. I just wanted to express musically what this city represents to me and how it has been shaping my sound over the years.
It seems like you are a bass aficionado, how do you go about getting the perfect bass sound?
Ever since I started making music I always loved bass, from my beginnings as a hip-hop producer to D&B and my latest incursions in dubstep. Bass is the only part of a song that your body can physically feel.
I think it has just been influenced by the bass culture in the UK, especially London. It would not make sense for me to make an album that did not reflect such a strong influence in my music.
To get the perfect bass sound I pay a lot of attention to each element on the track to make sure that there is enough room in the mix for the low frequencies to breathe.
What are your favourite places to go out in London?
There are far too many favorite places when I go out in London. However when I go out I just like to discover new spots, London has got a lot to offer and is a constant learning experience. I would probably say that one of the areas I like the most is by the riverside near Waterloo. There is definitely something magical about contemplating the sights of the city at night time, I can't never get tired of it.
Anything else you want to tell us about?
I would like to say thanks to Z Audio for making this album possible, it has been a great opportunity to be able to work on an album with total creative freedom, it means a lot to me. I'm really looking forward to see how the album is received by the listeners and I hope many people can relate to my music.
