Giant

Giant are a dubstep trio hailing from St. Petersburg, Russia. Ekta, Nersa and Enei make up this talented outfit releasing tunes under heavy hitting labels such as HENCH, Dub Police and Subway. Their next release, Herbert / Collins Booster, is out now on HENCH and has reinforced their talent for heavy hitting basslines and dancefloor vibes. Kmag caught up with one of the lads, Enei, to chat about all things Giant.

How did Giant start?
We started making jungle for quite a bit separately, listening to different kinds of music and DJing at clubs but when all three of us started producing together it was mostly dubstep. And when one of our first records was getting mastered for Dub Police, Caspa asked what name he should put on it. We thought it'd be silly and long to write all of our names, so Giant was born.

What are your musical influences?
We always listen to different styles and genres, trying to find something new. At the moment we're trying to bring the sounds of 80s and 90s back. We like the Detroit sound a lot and funk and African music like kuduro has always been an influence as well.

What production gear do you use in the studio?
We use FL Studio sequencer and a bunch of plugins for arrangements and mastering but the heart of our dubstep production is Native Instruments' Massive. This synth is perfect for cool sounds and basslines. We love the sound of ADAM monitors and have ADAM P11A and P22A in our studios.

How much has dubstep grown in Russia since you first started DJing and producing?
There has been a lot more producers coming out from Russia; of course the amount is incomparable to Europe or UK. There's a lot more promoters and events, both bad and good, but there are not many huge raves going on. And of course the army of dubstep fans has grown by thousands.

Your next release is through Jakes' heavy hitting label HENCH. How did this connection come about?
We just hit Jakes up on AIM and started talking. We sent Rockers to him and he really liked it and wanted to sign it for HENCH, but we had already promised it to Caspa for Dub Police. So we just agreed that our next release will be on HENCH. And there it is. We love HENCH and they like what we do, so it's pretty simple.

How would you describe the style of the HENCH release?
They're two dance floor tracks. Collins Booster came out pretty trendy, 'cause of the sounds of the 90s in it - just like the sound we like to have in our production these days. Herbert is a bit of a funny track with samples from Family Guy. People like fun music; nobody wants to be sad on the dancefloor.

Do you plan on touring soon?

We've just toured New Zealand, and going on a mini tour to Belgium. Plus some shows in Russia.

What labels and events are you involved with?
HENCH and we're working on some new releases on Dub Police in collaboration with an Estonian producer KGB. We're also residents of the best Russian bass night - Capital Bass in Moscow.
