F

French dubstep producer F on his new album, the evolving dubstep sound and why Fabric is his favourite club to play...

How did you get into dubstep?
I was heavily into drum & bass before I heard of dubstep, but in 2006 I really caught the bug. It was during this time that dubstep really started to emerge and I thought DnB was becoming uninspiring. I think that techno had a big influence getting me into the scene, especially the Detroit and Berlin sounds, as well as IDM, ambient, house, dub and 90s New York hip hop.

What is the French dubstep scene like?
It's developing slowly but surely. There are plenty of producers making great music at the moment such as Von-D and Helixir. The French press are also showing some interest in dubstep, but in no way can it be compared to the success this music has gained in the UK over the last few years.

Do you try to make your sound as unique as possible?
I'm trying to make music that I like, and if that makes it unique then that's fine! But I don't think every new track I do has to sound exclusive, I'm trying to have fun with what I do, otherwise I wouldn't make music.

As dubstep is developing more towards other genres it could be perceived that my music, is sounding more distinctive because a lot of the original dark, minimal sounds aren't as prevalent nowadays.

However, I think dubstep's mutation into the more electro / techno sound is still innovative. Artists like Scuba and Headhunter contribute to make it healthy and interesting, because they give dubstep more variation which can only be a good thing.

How have the last few years gone?
I signed up on the French dubstep forum www.dubstep.fr in 2008 and posted a link to my tunes. The day after, Greg, who runs 7even contacted me, telling me that he was interested in some of my tunes which was how I got signed to 7even Recordings.

I released my first album last month called Energy Distortion and I've played at Fabric as well which was such a great experience; it's my favourite place to DJ. It's funny; people keep asking me 'are you a DJ or a producer?' I had decks before I starting producing, however, I consider myself as a producer who likes to DJ.

What's next?
Following my debut album on 7even, there's a remix I did for Jus Wan called Azure on Pushing Red, another one for a track called Spronle by techno producer Samuel H Simpson on Take Records, and also a remix for Asusu on Project Squared.

There might be releases on 7even and Pushing Red in the future too, nothing confirmed though. Outside of music I'm studying communication at University so I've got a lot on my plate at the moment! Big up!
