Marky & XRS

LK by DJ Marky and XRS is one of the best drum & bass tracks of all time. It set the standard for smooth and stylish jungle and injected a much-needed dose of Brazilian flair into the scene when it launched on V Recordings in 2002. Knowledge recognised the track's importance by placing it third in our recent essential tracks of the decade.

What gives the track its Latin American flavour is the sublime guitar sample, which is taken from Carolina Bela by Jorge Ben and Toquinho. Jorge Ben, now known as Jorge Ben Jor, is one of Brazil's most popular musicians, having risen to fame in 1963 with his first hit, Mas Que Nada, which is still the most-played track in the US sung solely in Portugese.

Jorge Ben often worked with Toquinho, otherwise known as Antônio Pecci Filho, one of Brazil's most famous guitarists. The two collaborated on Carolina Bela, which appeared on Toquinho's self-titled 1970 album on Brazil's RGE Records. The song is a lovesick homage to the beautiful but elusive Carolina Bela of the title. Performed vaguely in the bossa nova style, it's a melancholy but tender number.

Hailing from Brazil, both Marky and collaborator XRS were naturally familiar with their country's rich musical heritage. On LK, they take Toquinho's jazzy chords and combine them with a shuffling drum break, muted organ and warm bass to great effect. They even use some of the vocal, but apply a light delay sound to add to the dreamlike quality of the track. It proved to be a masterful concoction, retaining all the elegance of the source song but providing an infectious rhythm guaranteed to get feet and hips moving.
