Crissy Criss Interview

14 Aug 2012

Crissy

You’ll have seen him DJing, heard his radio shows…now you can go to one of his nights. Crissy Criss And Friends returns to Proud2 on the 7th of September. A line up which includes Crissy also has DC Breaks, Mampi Swift and loads more. Kmag tracked down the globetrotter for an interview, which you can read right here.

Hi Crissy, how are you? Looking over your bios, it’s hard to know where to start with the interview! Let the readers know about some of the many things you are up to at the moment.
Haha I know, I was looking back at it the other day, a couple different versions of it from past years where things had to be added and added again. Been going well over 15 years now and I just can’t get enough! Up to loads at the moment, non-stop DJing all over the world, getting in the studio as much as I can to finish off stuff as it’s always hard juggling the both!

Would you say there are parts of what you do that you enjoy most?
I love it all, every minute of it. Mixing is just everything to me, it’s what I’ve always wanted to do and this far in to my career I just want more and more. When I go out on nights off I find myself being really desperate and frustrated to get on the decks and play! I love seeing people have a great time and going crazy, also the people really knowing what your actually doing and setting out to achieve behind the decks. It’s crazy how you can give someone the greatest feeling in the world just from dropping a mix.

What have been some of your highlights of 2012 so far?
Just soo many gigs, they’ve all been great. I can’t wait for next couple of months as a lot will be happening that I can’t really announce just yet!

So you are behind a new event – Crissy Criss and Friends – the next of which is on the 7th September. Why’ve you decided to set this up, and what is the vibe behind the event?
Yeah it’s about time I had something of my own, people always ask me when am I doing an event, I just never have time for it. Now the time is right and I got some good people helping me out it’s finally come together. The vibes all about the MUSIC which in some cases these days is all about 9 MCs going at it once! Not feeling that, 1 DJ and 1 MC that’s all you need!

Who’s on the line up? What can ravers expect from a night put on by Crissy Criss?
On the line is some bloke called Crissy Criss, Mampi Swift, DC Breaks, Taxman, Futurebound, Ayah Marah, Harry Shotta, Funsta, Evil B, DJ Profile, Melo D, Uno and more!. Aim of the night is to have one crazy party, wide variety of music, one thing I do hate is people booking line ups when fully knowing EVERYONE is going to play the same damn tunes! What’s the point in going!?. The first event we done was great, we started off in the second room at Proud2 not knowing what was going to happen due to Fabric being on and also a lot of D&B heads at Innovation In The Sun, 50minutes in to opening the doors it was RAMMED OUT, so we had to shut it down and open up the main room which also then got rammed which the amount of people that kept on coming! Expect the same on 7th September, just pure vibes and lots of FREE entry!

What other live shows have you got in the pipeline?
All I’ll say is WATCH THIS SPACE! For full tour dates check out crissycriss.co.uk

Do you have more releases planned?
Yeah I’ve got loads in the pipeline, it’s just getting the time to finish them off and mix them down, which I have been doing much more lately in the time I get at home. It’s always hard when ya ears are constantly ringing! Haha... I’ve currently started a new dubstep project called ‘DeadExit’ which is myself and 3 other people so watch this space. I’m currently finishing off my next E.P for Technique which will be all drum & bass. Sit back and hold tight!

What do you think drives you? Your involvement and dedication to the scene seems unstinting, and you work very hard at what you do – what do you put this down to?
All comes down to the love for the music. When you love something with your heart and everything else and you will go out of your way and put in ridiculous long hours behind a computer or long hours / days traveling to gigs. It’s all for the love of it, your fans are there to help you understand what you’re doing and who you are, without them you’re no one. Without the people who follow and support me – it’s them who drive me to what I want to achieve.

Do you ever have any down time? What do you do on days off?
Every day is a working day for me, from when I wake up till I go to sleep (whenever that is). On a day off I still find myself working, but in my head, I don’t think days off are meant to happen for me - I don’t know what it is, I get bored really easy. IF I do have a day off it consists off going to see my mum, some friends or staying in bed watching TV.

On a similar tip – do you have time for other music besides bass music? What do you like?
Yeah all the time, most of my life is spent in my car or on a plane in transit somewhere so I listen to a lot of music on my iPhone/iPad, a lot of old skool hip hop, reggae, 70’s, 80’s, everything! If you put my iPad on shuffle you wouldn’t know what to expect!
