Bredren Guest Mix

Bredren

With their Pestilence EP coming out on July 16th on Proximity Recordings, we caught with up-and-coming drum & bass trio Bredren to see what they're all about…

Where are you from and to what extent would you say this influences your music?
We're from Lennik, near Brussels, Belgium. In Belgium, the drum&bass scene has always been good in the past but nowadays more and more DJs and producers are getting involved in the deeper scene. This influences our style deeply.

When did you first try your hand at DJing and producing?
Dieter first started DJing four years ago together with his friend Frederik and they became the drum & bass duo Orphans. Sebastien and Adrien loved what Orphans were doing so they decided to leap in to the world of DJing too and so Requake was born. After three years working separately Requake and Dieter from Orphans became Bredren.

How would you describe your approach to making music?
In the studio we always try to seek the more experimental, deeper, minimalistic and darker sound. We try to make something that hasn't been done yet.

What's your studio set-up like?
The studio is very basic. It's a small barn in Adrien's garden. Each one of us has his own sofa and ideas. We have a pair of monitors and we work with Propellerhead's Reason 6 on Sebastien's laptop. We also have a mixer and CDJs in case we're not in producing mode.

Tell us more about your forthcoming release on Proximity, what did you have in mind when you made it?
We've always wanted to make a tune with some descent vocals so we contacted Beezy through Requake. This tune needed a lot of time to finish but when the final version was done, we were so thrilled that we made Biosphere on the same day. Stepping Stones and the M-zine & Scepticz remix of Pestilence came later because Basher proposed doing an EP on Proximity.

How did you manage to hook up with Proximity and what's it like working with them?
Dieter came in contact with Basher last summer, when he booked him for an event in Brussels. We'd just started Bredren and had made our first tune, Pulsar, which we'd sent to Basher. He was sold at once and since then the interest in Bredren kept on growing. Proximity is very nice to work with, there's no pressure at all. Due to Proximity's tight promo we have a lot of growing opportunities.

Got any other releases / remixes in the pipeline we should look out for?
At the moment, we've only got a collab going with Displaced Paranormals, which is featured in the mix. Besides that we have a VIP we're working on.

Are you making any other styles of music apart from drum & bass?
Sebastien and Adrien produce dubstep under the name Requake.

Where can people see you play in the near future?
Most of our bookings are in Belgium. This summer we'll play on some small festivals like Beatfarm Festival and Forest Festival. At the end of the summer we're playing at Outlook Festival in Croatia. We're really stoked about that.

What do you get up to outside of music?
We're all students so we go to school during the week (at least we try). During weekends we drink beer.

Any advice for any aspiring producers / DJs out there?
"Keep doing your thing", that's what most people told us.

What tracks, producers and labels are you feeling at the moment?
Labels: Samurai, Horizon, Exit, Proximity, Break-Fast Audio, Critical, Shogun, Different, Dispatch and so on. Tracks: Joaquin - Tears, Lenzman & Riya - How Did I Let U Go, Skeptical & Dub Phizix – Run It Like A President. Producers: Amoss, Skeptical, Clarity, Mtwn, M-Zine & Skepticz, Athomospherix, Halogenix.

Tell us a bit more about the mix you are giving away with us and how you went about selecting the tracks for it...
We wanted to bring a versatile mix of all the tunes we're really feeling at this moment. There were a lot of tracks we could chose and we tried to put the best together.
