When The Futureheads started their new label this year their first choice of remixer was Black Noise. When Southern Fried needed someone to take their Diplo and Laidback Luke release to another level they contacted Black Noise. And when Ministry Of Sound put together their wish list for remixers of the globally successful Riverside (Let's Go!) it was Black Noise who were added to that list.
It's been a hectic 12 months for the three man team from the South Coast of England. They've had two EPs released on Norman Cook's Southern Fried label and have another two to complete before a debut album will drop on the label later in the year.
They have racked up 15 remixes and have topped the Hype Machine charts with their remix of Crookers ft. Wiley. With support coming in from the likes of Kissy Sellout, Lee Mortimer, Foamo, Kid Kinobe, Tommie Sunshine, Laidback Luke, Mighty Fools and the Loose Cannons the next 12 months should further strengthen the mass appeal of these bass addicts across the globe. We caught up with them to find out what makes them tick...
What would you call style of music do you make?
Not really sure what you would call it. It's got some 4/4 and some breakbeat action going on, it's got a helluva lotta bass and a variety of musical influences. I have heard some call it warehouse and others fidget, tho neither of those definitions feel comfortable and not what we would use to describe it. Cut-Up House, that feels about right!
You seem to have sprung from nowhere and in a short amount of time released and remixed a large amount of tracks for some big name producers, tell us more...
We have been around for a while working on different projects but yes, we have been very lucky to have had some great remixes offered to us and we work pretty quick getting them done. It looks like we have been going at it like madmen but in reality we just work very pretty damn fast.
You're signed to Fat Boy Slim's Southern Fried label, how did that come about?
We were asked to do a remix for Fatboy on one of his projects which he vibed on, so he asked us to work on his label. A pretty casual affair really but it's nice to have recognition from someone like Norman Cook!
How did the Sidney Samson ft. Wizard Sleeve - Riverside (Let's Go) hook up come about? That's a massive release, how many copies did it sell?
It's nearly hit gold now, I think around 370,000 units or so! Ministry liked the vocals and asked if they could put onto the Sidney Samson track. We got the vocals redone so they were radio friendly and that's about the size of it really. The vocals were originally on our first EP on a track called Me Plus You. For the record I can no longer listen to Riverside but I still love Me Plus You!
You're working on your debut album, tell us what we can expect, any exciting collaborations and vocalists?
It's still early doors on the album. We are still writing the EPs so we haven't really grasped a specific concept for our LP. I think we need to mature our productions first before we plough straight into the album... see where all our heads are at. But yes, expect some awesome hook-ups on the album, we are good at finding those!
Will the album be a collection of singles or is it supposed to work more as a coherent whole?
God knows! It certainly wont be a collection of singles but it also won't be some kinda roaming concept album. I would 'hope' it will work as a coherent whole. I think once we nail the sound we are looking for then we will know what a gwarnin. The EPs are great for us to get to that end sound that we are currently in pursuit of...
Anything else you want to tell us about?
Get ya world news from presstv.com and if ya haven't tried em, get onto those American Cheeseburger Walkers Crisps before the end of the World Cup. Strictly limited dubplate pressure!
What tracks, producers and labels are you feeling at the moment?
Mighty Fools, Kelevra, Will Bailey, Nick Thayer, Excision, HeavyFeet, Reset!, Lee Mortimer, Foamo and Disco Trash Music. They tick all the right boxes for us.
What's the best piece of advice you've ever had?
Be nice to people on the way up as you will meet them on the way down.
What's the best piece of equipment you've ever used?
Akai 950 for those old school memories and a Fender Rhodes!
What was the best set you've ever heard?
The best sets are usually heard on the best nights out which are usually the ones you have problems remembering the next day! I think seeing Portishead at the Ashton Court Festival in the 90s was pretty ill. And then flying out to see them a couple of years back in Amsterdam kinda brought the memories flooding back!
