Bachelors Of Science

Gearing up for the release of their second full length LP, Warehouse Dayz, San Francisco based duo Bachelors of Science are poised to make some serious noise in the drum & bass community in 2010.

Linking up over a decade ago, Phil "Rene" and Chris "DJ Fokus", have formed a strong musical bond that has produced several major releases, such as The New Horizons EP and Science Fiction to name a few.

"It all started at a bar around 1999 ... but then so does everything right? Only difference is we were actually working together, well ... kinda working! From that we hung out with a bunch of other Brits in San Francisco and things just developed from there. Chris taught me how to DJ, I taught him how to produce ... and we both met in the middle. Just continued everything ever since."

The new album gives the listener a few different looks at the BOS sound. Everything from light and soulful to deep and dark can be found on this great collection of music. Living and producing in San Francisco, they often find musical inspiration from the city they call home.

"San Francisco was a big influence for the album... it's kind of an ode to the city. Funny thing is that it takes years and years before you finally "get" the city and what everyone's about. But it's very possible and often you have just the perfect day ... brunch with some friends, drinks in the day in the sun, outdoor club at night, post party back at the house, great conversations with close friends. Kinda just wanted to make an album that fit each of those moods."

This album it's definitely a mood progression through music, and covers a wide spectrum of sounds not limited to drum & bass. Unlike previous releases, the Warehouse Dayz LP does not feature any collaborations, other than a remix of Ice Dance, courtesy of Lenzman. This is a slightly different look than we're used to seeing, with previous albums featuring collaborations with heavy hitters like Seba, Bungle, Atlantic Connection, Lynx, and Instra:mental to name a few.

"Nothing personal, Lenzman's on there ... that kinda counts, right? No real reason; and expect many collabs to come from this. We just felt like we wanted to make this one ourselves," explained Rene.

With this mega album, brought to you by Horizons Music, hitting the shops in early April, the Bachelors have a heavy pipeline of work and music incoming for the world to enjoy.

"We'll probably be releasing stuff on a bunch of places where it makes sense. But the reason we like Horizons is because they'll just let us do whatever we want. That's really refreshing ... and suited where we are at the moment. There's easily 50 or so unfinished tracks sitting around. Hopefully some of them will make the light of day."

With the current formats of drum & bass and electronic music albums ever changing, the guys have a unique outlook on where they see the music going from here. This album gives a look at the progression of their sound as well as the new direction full length d&b albums have recently taken.

"The great thing about drum & bass is the believers don't really care what's being said about the genre. If its "out of fad" then hey, you're "underground". If it's "in fad" then hey, "you're cool". Does it really matter either way? It's nice to have the freedom to try whatever you want in a genre, that's how new genres are born."

Having their tunes touted by the biggest names in the game such as Marky, LTJ Bukem, Annie Mac, and High Contrast, a heavy list of remixes and collaborations with some of drum & bass's most respected producers, and no slowing down in sight, what's the next up for this talented duo?

"We'll be in the UK soon, doing a few limited dates in April. Bristol, Liverpool, DNBTV, possibly Leeds and some other places. Then we'll finally get around to touring a bit of the USA. Hopefully visit New Zealand later in the year, and somewhere in between just enjoying the Bloody Marys and summer in San Francisco. We also have this crazy idea about a huge Daft Punk styled visual live show with a huge rack of outboard gear and oscillators ... we've started to make it happen, but we'll see. It takes time."

With the new album released, international touring schedule, and summer Bloody Marys incoming, the future is bright for these two.
