Breaking News

Breaking News are a Russian collective that have been steadily releasing some of the most consistent breaks music to come out of the Eastern Bloc in recent years. Their latest release, the Oldschool Bizz EP, steps right back to 1992 with both feet forwards and is arguably one of the best retrospective hardcore tracks around at the moment. Read on for more gossip on this Russian trio.

Tell us a bit about the band and how you came together...
Well, we started back in 2007. Between us we were either in rock bands or DJing. We met at a gig one night and decided to meet and talk about starting a project. This was the birth of Breaking News. Igor had produced music previously, so we decided to get together and make some music.

What is the breaks scene like in Russia at the moment?
Well, there are a lot of good breaks producers in Russia, but sadly breaks culture is dying as many producers are staring to go into making dubstep and electro house. We can only hope for the best and make every possible effort to revive the scene here! Lady Waks, Access Denied, Davip and F-Word are just a few to keep your eye on.

Where is your studio based?

We're basically working from home using a Mac and Logic Audio, though we are hoping to move into a full studio very soon.

Tell us a bit about how your tracks come together, do you play different roles in the studio?
We just sit down and start writing. We tend to work together with one giving direction and the other at the controls. We each have our own opinion, and they combine to make the hybrid which is Breaking News!

You seem to have had a few releases so far. What sort of a reception have they had, both at home in Russia and elsewhere?
We've had many releases which seem to have been well received in Russia and further afield. We get good feedback from the big names in the scene, so I think we are moving in the right direction. We are quite popular in Russia and have a active gig list which spans the whole entire country. We've also been in top 100 DJs poll in Russia, so we're happy with the way things are moving. This year we were also nominated for best producers at the Breakspoll awards.

Your new release Oldschool Bizz is based around the classic European/UK rave sound of the early 90s.  The breaks scene is that way inclined anyway, but what influenced these tracks in particular?
The 90s was our era, with plenty of very good memories. This was also the time that we formed our musical tastes, so the sounds and moods will always be close to our hearts. We wanted to honour that era.

How long do you generally spend making tracks? Do you set time aside to complete a project, or is it more organic?
Sometimes we write a track in one day, and at other times it can span several sessions. We also have day jobs, so it can be difficult. If we were writing full time, things would be very different.

Have you got any gigs or shows lined up to promote the new single?
We've just returned from a gig in Estonia as well as gigging in our home town and doing a few radio shows.

What about any future projects you have coming up. Do you make any other styles of music between you?
We have a lot of Breaking News releases floating around, but also have our side project, Finish Him!, which caters for the other non breaks music we make, and is focussed more towards Europe than Russia. We've just signed an exclusive contract with Bonerizing Records in Sweden and they are fully engaged in promoting the project.
