Babu

This week world champion turntablist, world famous Beat Junkie and the Dilated Peoples very own DJ Babu jets into the UK for a headline show at Fabric on Friday Feb 12th. All this week we'll be getting the lowdown on the west coast legend's new album, moviemaking aspirations and the future of Dilated Peoples but first we need to know about that gig.

What can the fans expect from Friday night's show?
I think they can expect to come out and have a good fucking time! I want people to come out have a drink, smoke and be ready to party down with me, dance and hear some good music.

That sounds like a good party, will it be a turntablist set or more party orientated?
I hope to get up there and play for two hours. I like to keep it personal and I like to play music that I personally love to hear. I put a lot of skill into the mix, I cut it up and get clever with the blends and the mixes but for the most part it ain't a staring contest, it's a party. The way I look at it, it's their party I'm just playing the music, so hopefully people come in with open ears and open minds, in a good mood ready to have a beer and hear some good music.

So what kind of crowd do you normally attract, scratch nerds or DJ groupies?
Personally I get a lot of scratch fans and DJs, a lot of my fans just do what I do and relate to me. It's a little different being in a rap group, when I go out and do a Dilated Peoples show we do get some groupies. They are probably there more for Evidence and Raaka but you know what I'm saying - I don't do bad myself!

Ladies beware, Babu is on the loose! Other than hooking up with London's lovely female population are there any other collaborations you'd like to make happen while you're in the UK?
I'd love to work with Blak Twang, Taskforce and Dizzee Rascal. I love a lot of groups and MCs over there, the London scene is no joke. There are a lot of really raw MCs over there that I'm into lyrically, but I'm not really used to the sound. I can imagine a lot of these mfs getting on a Babu beat though and making some incredible music.

After hearing that I wouldn't be surprised if Mr Rascal, Mr Rotton and the Taskforce brothers make an appearance at Fabric this Friday along with the rest of us groupies, nerds and Beat Junkies. Catch Babu at The Doctor's Orders on Friday 12th of February @Fabric 77a Charterhouse St, London EC1 3HN
