19-year-old producer Z Dot has been slugging it out in the grime scene since 2005 and is now setting almost impossible-to-match standards with every new tune.
Starting off posting show-reels of material on the old RWD forums, Z Dot knows better than most how hard musical-graft can pay off. From his earlier works with the likes of Snoopy, Slaughter, Desperado to his more recent offerings with Ghetto, Maveric, Revolver and Wiley, Z Dot has a huge catalogue of tracks.
With the Go Getterish EP is due for release soon, Kmag caught up with him to discuss his situation..
Your latest offering is the digital EP with Doller Da Dustman, take us through it...
The Go Getterish EP is a hard-hitting four-track grime release featuring the likes of Ghetts, Double S, Maveric, Mercston and Delusion.
Doller has had releases out before whereas this is your first release, excluding free downloads, how would you describe the effort you've made compared to those free CDs you were putting out ?
I've always put 100% into music, whether it's a free release or not. We made a lot of music for this project, you can find some of the tracks that didn't make it onto the EP on The Preview which we gave out for free.
You've done a considerable amount of work with Doller, would you say you almost work as a producer / MC "Dream Team"?
You're right! There probably isn't another producer / MC partnership that does as much work as we do. We've have created a unique sound, and that will come across on the EP and all our forthcoming projects.
One of the biggest debates at the moment is grime vs rap, which genre has better music? You produce both forms of music plus more on top, where do you stand on the matter?
I don't think you can say one genre is better than another, it's all down to individual opinions. I just enjoy making good music.
What is Go Getters all about? Is it a collective or is it more of a brand, like a promotional platform?
Go Getters is a company at the moment, it's just music, but in the near future you'll be seeing a range of entertainment, clothing and more...
Last year saw a fresh new emphasis on producers, with instrumentals available by the bucket-load, the trend is now creeping into 2010, what do you think triggered the sudden 'producer movement' as such?
There were less vocal CDs last year than in previous years, which allowed producers to step up and release some solo CDs. 2010 will be a massive year for grime, and I believe it's about time producers received the recognition they deserve.
You've just met someone who is unfamiliar with your sound, how would you describe it to them?
My recent work has a very polished feel to it, it's full of emotions. I've been working with a wider range of instruments including the electric guitar and I'm using more acoustic based instruments in my recent productions. The beats that I'm known for to date like Dirty Date and Artillery have a dark side to them, and give an instant feeling of power and aggression.
What's next for Z Dot?
I have an instrumental EP coming out featuring four bangers. A free vocal /instrumental mixtape plus a vocal mix tape (full release) called A New Light, and I'm also working on a solo album and other projects.
You've said elsewhere that the tunes you like best are for people's mixtapes and albums, has much changed there?
Not really, I enjoy making good quality music that ends up on film soundtracks, albums and mixtapes. I've also got the instrumental releases coming out as well though because they stand up on their own and there's a lot of people that prefer instrumentals to vocals.
You just mentioned about your music being featured on film soundtracks and your production for Artillery was showcased on new film Shank, is this just the start of a commercial chain for your music?
Yeah, definitely, you're going to be seeing a lot of the commercial side of Z Dot in the future, singles and albums are on the way!
To accompany our interview Z Dot gave us Loaded Gun, a completely free instrumental which you can download below and you can get a copy of the Go Getterish EP from April 26th. You can follow Z Dot on Twitter.
