First things first, I'd like to say March was a fantastic month for grime. Whilst some may question whether Tinie Tempah's Pass Out is a legitimate grime number one, plenty of other stuff has been wetting the beaks of those hardcore fans.
Unfortunately long-running East London record shop Rhythm Division has had to cease trading after a clear lack of vinyl and CD demand, with iTunes and the like pretty much in control of the music scene nowadays. They still sell stock online so go and grab some bargains! If you need some help deciding... here's the top ten releases for March 2010.
Ghetto - Trained To Kill
In early 2009 it was fair to say Ghetts came under some heavy fire for his low work rates and shoddy electro attempt Sing For Me. But since then he's become embroiled in a war with South London MC P Money, stepped up his game and hit the scene with an array of tunes such as Set You Free, Autopsy and Does It Now. With Dot Rotten on the hook, Ghetto's catchy rhymes fit the bill perfectly making a fantastic track!
Deeperman & Devlin - Rapid Fire
If you're like me in any sort of way then you too would find great appreciation within the real dirty and disgusting grime vibes this tune offers. Deeperman has stepped up his game immensely since we first heard his name on Saga House and with each and every song that emerges from OT's camp I get more impressed, especially with Devlin whose lyrical ability clearly out-shines most other MCs about at the moment. Outakers.com is where you need to be for the download.
Sharky Major ft. Devlin, P Money, Ghetts & Dot Rotten - Shark Attack Remix
Known primarily as the tune that kicked off the grime scene's answer to world war three, Sharky Major finally got round to releasing this remix as a part of a digital bundle also including the Skepta produced instrumental. Every MC brings something different, especially Devlin who does little more than tear his verse into shreds, whilst P Money and Ghetto parade around the track like terrorists, bombing each other lyrically at every available chance! Hit iTunes to grab this now.
Jammer - Better Than
Jammer is without doubt one of the scene's pioneering artists, starting off as a DJ and then wobbling between producing and MCing. The second single offering since his signing to Big Dada, Better Than sees the Murkle Man tear up an absolutely disgusting Rapid beat whilst referencing various other MCs such as Dizzee Rascal and D Double E in an attempt to highlight the elite force of grime artists.
Balistiq - Powercut Riddim
Balistiq Beats are coming along quite well as producers, after enjoying success last year producing for the likes of Wiley, Trim and more. PowerCut Riddim utilises the best of digital sound effects to accompany an infectious stabbing-like rhythm previously vocalled by Shizzle, Badness and Trim on separate versions. Pick up Trim's new double-CD Trim City to hear the hype.
Ghetto - Artillery
A new film out at the moment entitled Shank (featuring Bashy) sees life on the streets of London in a future year, and just like any film that arrives in cinemas these days there's a soundtrack. Ghetto's Artillery was one of the featured releases with its hard-hitting rhymes and Ghetto's inch perfect delivery. Featuring Z Dot on the non-stop-evil production, Ghetto shows why 2010 could just well be the year he takes over the scene! Buy the Shank soundtrack from iTunes now and keep your eyes peeled for the Calm Before The Storm mixtape.
Teeza - Secret Level
Sampling noises from old computer games is all the rage with producers these days. 2009 saw Royal-T explode onto the circuit with his Mario-sampled 1 Up. Up-and-coming producer Teeza seems to be at it now, and his offering Secret Level is something definitely worth playing. The repetitive sounds and bass-filled rhythm shows why Teeza is quickly making a name for himself with DJs such as Logan Sama touting him as one to watch for this year! Check out his EP here now where you can grab four quality beats for £1.99.
Kozzie - Wooo Freestyle
Every man and his poodle has had a go on S-X's Wooo Riddim and with so many versions floating around, going nowhere, it's hard to pick some good ones. Merky ACE and Footsie have both delivered some pretty sick ones, but this version by Kozzie is my favourite so far, with a fresh new set of bars and a killer flow used to take shots at Voltage and co.
Big H ft. Bossman & President T - Big Hooligan Remix
The original to this tune featured just Big H on his own, and it was one of 2009's biggest songs by far. This time H's fellow Bloodline Crew members Bossman and President T add their own slice of greeze to Skepta's DISGUSTING production cooking up something that would force the dirtiest of screw faces onto the cleanest of plain faced listeners.
Terror Danjah - SideChain (DOK Remix)
Butterz long awaited label springs to the top of the list with their very first release, a 12" from Terror Danjah. It features title track Bipolar, Air Bubble (which has been remixed by every Tom, Dick and Starkey going) and, my personal favourite, a remix of his tune Sidechain by D.O.K. The heavy-bass fuelled tune starts off with MC Bruza's "COME ON - let's avvv it" phrase and what follows can only be described as dangerous! 100 % worth a listen.
