2009 was a big year for Bristol-based DJ and producer Gemmy. After swaggering into many people's consciousness with the future-funk of his debut Bk 2 the Future 12" on Punch Drunk, he has gone from strength to strength, picking up a lot of fans on the way.
He released some of the most exciting tracks of last year, in the form of the Supligen and Johnny 5 EPs on Planet Mu, as well as featuring on Mary-Anne Hobbs' prestigious Wild Angels compilation.
With a burgeoning DJ schedule and an album planned for release later this year, Gemmy's synth-soaked, grimey productions are set to send him stratospheric.
Kmag caught up with the increasingly busy Gemmy for a few quick questions about how 2009 was for him and what he has planned for 2010:
How was 2009 for you?
Last year was a great year for me; it was the introduction to the Planet Mu era. 'Supligen' was a massive release along with the 'Johnny 5' EP.
What has been your proudest moment to date?
One of my proudest moments would have to be going to the US and seeing two of my releases in a big record shop and also seeing one of my releases in Japan.
Your DJing schedule has really picked up over the last year. What have been your favourite places that you have played?
I played in some amazing places last year. A few that stand out are Germany, where I played in a church, and the Burning Man festival after party in San Francisco.
How is work on the album going?
The album is coming on good at present. I've been working a lot and creating new stuff which will feature on the album. I don't really want to reveal the full ins and outs just yet.
What can we expect from the album?
The album will feature various styles which a lot of people won't have heard before from myself. The idea is to bring something fresh to the scene.
What have you got planned for 2010? Have you got any other releases or projects in the pipeline?
I've got a few remixes coming out at the start of the year. One of those, A Night on the Wonk (Gemmy remix), will be out in the middle of March. So keep your eyes peeled.
Who else should we be watching out for in 2010?
I think people should look out for Mensah who's making some big tunes right now, and SDUK, who has just been signed to Starkey's new label.
