One4Ho is a new dubstep label formed by Mai Harper and Sophie Ruston, who met one fateful summer in Berlin. The label is Bristol / Brighton / Berlin based, however they aim for international recognition. Sophie produces under the Ghettozoid moniker (pictured) while Mai DJs dubstep, techno and garage. We spoke to them to find out more.
Why are you starting One4Ho?
Mai: When we met in Berlin all those moons ago we shared the same driving passion for music. I loved the first track and kept egging Sophie to just do do something about it. Oh yeah, and being a DJ I hope to get given lots of dubplates.
What's the meaning behind the name?
Sophie: When people asked me what sort of music I was making, all I could tell them was it was 140bpm, so it's a play on words, girls that love 140bpm!
Who is involved with running it?
Mai: It's a dual management team with me and Sophie taking care of all the business side. Then we have chosen to support the female of the species with the creative process too, using a female designer from Bristol called Milk for the logos and Lizzie Eve covers the photography (see her work on the cover of albums by Pinch, 2562 and a bunch more).
What's the ethos behind the label?
Sophie: I had several big name producers approach me about remixing Seeking after Mary Anne Hobbs played it on her show, and once I had got them back, I was loving how the tune had progressed into different directions, so it got me thinking about exploring the tempo and getting producers we love to remix outside of their comfort zone, or getting producers on board who are already pushing the boundaries.
Tell us more about your forthcoming releases...
Mai: The first release is a track called Seeking by Ghettozoid feat Yolanda with remixes from Teknoist and Blue Daisy. This is scheduled for the end of February. The second is from Silverman, a producer based in Berlin, he is releasing a couple of remixes on Warp Records and he is set to be one of their 2010 rising artists. I'm super excited about him, his tunes blow my mind, and everyone that I play them to.
The third is Ghettozoid featuring a Berlin producer/vocalist whom I unfortunately can't mention at this stage, due to contracts, etc. We're also discussing remixes for this, which is really exciting as I know a lot of producers will be keen to get on this.
Also, in the pipeline we have very exciting remixes planned from a whole host of dubstep, techno, leftfield artists such as Pinch, Ginz, LV, Duran Duran Duran, Baobinga and we're in talks with Dasha Rush, October and Berlin's finest Substance to get on techno flex. With amazing remixes in the pipeline, expect great things for 2010.
Anything else you want to tell us about?
Sophie: I'm about to go on tour with Bubbz as his DJ, we tour USA in March, hitting up NY, SXSW & MWMC, as well as all the UK festivals throughout the summer. I've started featuring as a vocalist, so far I've worked with Bubbz, Duran Duran Duran and due to release on Berlin label Eintakt. And I have a new collaboration with two of my former Octopussy collective, under the guise of Revolva. So there's a lot going on right now!
